I can’t draw to save my life, but I’ve encountered enough artists who make at least part of their livings through commissions to get a sense of what that market is like.
One thing that quickly becomes clear is that the job requires something of an open mind because artists will often find that the clients who pay the best will also have the strangest requests. But just as commonly, they’ll find that a lot of people in this world either don’t understand or choose not to care why their pieces are priced the way they are.
But while it’s definitely satisfying to hear about cases when artists got one over on their unappreciative customers, it’s just as amusing when even they have no idea what somebody’s problem is.
On November 6, an artist who goes by dippdot on Reddit posted an exchange with a mom who wanted a refund because her daughter commissioned a drawing with her money.

But while the artist’s post , showed that her first couple of messages seemed reasonable enough, the fact that it was a $20 commission through the creator payment platform Ko-Fi raised some alarm bells.
Because not only had the artist recently closed their Ko-Fi page, but they didn’t recall any piece done for $20.
It also didn’t help that the mom couldn’t produce the drawing in question and just gave a vague description of it being a gray wolf.
But when the mom tried to find the drawing on the artist’s profile, it seems she got more than a little side-tracked.

She sent the artist a screenshot of this drawing and accused them of promoting demons and alcohol.
But even more bizarrely, she followed up this admonishment for drawing “demonic things” by saying, “Give me your mother’s phone number.”
Both amused and confused by this sudden turn, the artist informed the woman that they’re an adult and their mother has no control over what they draw.

With that, they tried to get things back on track and told the mom while they’re sympathetic to her problem, she’ll have to produce some evidence that her daughter commissioned them before she’ll see any refund.
However, it seemed the mom found a new preoccupation because she said, “People like you are the reason why demonic imagery is allowed into media today.”

And if that wasn’t enough to unpack, she then asked the artist for a place to review their work so she could “warn others” about it.
Finally, she seemed to end their communications with, “I want my refund or I’m unleashing my followers onto you! You need to repent!”
Because nothing convinces a person to provide a forum where they can be reviewed quite like threats of internet dogpiling.
Needless to say, the artist didn’t give her anything she wanted, least of all their mother’s phone number.
