Aw sweet! Now we get to talk about all the things that Amazon has to keep in tact for the upcoming Lord Of The Rings series they’re apparently doing!
Sounds cool!
Here’s a big revelation…

People love Lord Of The Rings . This is a group of people in which I include myself, because who wouldn’t?
It’s fun yet somber, bright yet gritty, and it’s full of action-packed fantasy awesomeness.
Which is probably why Amazon has decided to do a series on the massively successful and critically acclaimed book trilogy.

Which also became a massively successful and critically acclaimed film trilogy.
Because why wouldn’t you?
Unlike a lot of cool things that don’t ever end up being made…

Development for this is actually going at a pretty steady pace!
We have a director, J.A. Bayona, and showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay respectively.

J.A. Bayona directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom so he’s used to handling big blockbusters.
Also…

There’s another crew member that you probably wouldn’t see on any other set but is integral to this show’s production (sounds like a riddle, doesn’t it?).
Anyways, it’s J.R.R. Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey.
What will this 22 episode series be about?

Well, it’s going to take place during the Second Age of Middle Earth (for reference, the movies take place during the Third Age).
So this means what?

Well, while we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen during the series, we know they have about 3441 years to work with and that it will end with the death of Sauron.
So it really means that we won’t see most of the characters from the movies.

Sorry people who were thinking we’d see a young version of Aragon, because none of them were actually born yet.
The question remains: what can they do?

Well, that’s the reason they have the Tolkein expert on set, for the most part.
To make sure that the filmmakers, while having some creative ability, stay in line.
If you’ve read the Simarillion, you probably won’t be surprised.

Indiewire , the resident expert Shippey says:
“The Tolkien Estate will insist that the main shape of the Second Age is not altered.”
A quick rundown was given by Tom Shippey.

He says, in the very least, this still has to happen :
“Sauron invades Eriador, is forced back by a Númenorean expedition, and returns to Númenor. There he corrupts the Númenoreans and seduces them to break the ban of the Valar.”
That’s why we’re thinking that Númenor will be where the show takes place.

There will be a lot of corruption, some intrigue, some characters turning against each other.
If you’re missing Game Of Thrones , this may be the series for you.
They can’t really change the Tolkein history, but they’re apparently allowed to add new characters.

They are allowed to ask new questions about what’s going on, as long as the end results remain the same.
Honestly…

We had the Lord Of The Rings books while the movies came out, but it was the spectacle and the way they were presented that really resonated with us.
Or at least with me.
What do you think?

Is the Tolkein estate being way too stingy with their intellectual property? Or is all of this perfectly valid?
Honestly, just be excited about the series, it’s bound to be the bomb.
