Because it’s a complete roll of the dice as to who our parents will be, it varies so much from person to person as to what we’ll be able to trust them with.
That’s why there are so many people out there who are hiding things from their parents, and the saddest among them are those who are hiding who they really are.
And it’s for that reason that someone who no longer has to live that way is not likely to cooperate when others ask them to leave the ones they love out of family events because they’re worried about what others will think.
But as one story illustrates, that’s not a decision that always comes easily for people. And that’s especially true when standing your ground in this way can cost you a whole relationship.
Over the last seven months, a 17-year-old boy has been seeing a girl he goes to school with.
As he explained in a Reddit post , his girlfriend’s parents wanted to meet his parents once it was safe to do so. And when the girlfriend communicated this, both he and his two mothers liked the idea.
That is, until the girlfriend came to him with a particular caveat.
Namely, that only one of his moms could go because her parents aren’t aware that his parents are both women.
And as he put it, “She don’t want them to because they’re not raging homophobes but they don’t like that.”

For that reason, she stated her belief that bringing both parents would make things weird and uncomfortable for them.
But as he said, this seemed both hurtful to his parents and ultimately pointless because if the couple stays together, her parents are eventually going to learn the truth anyway.
In his words, “I never been embarrassed about it or weird so don’t see why it even matters.”
However, this reaction made the girlfriend angry and she demanded he go through with this plan anyway for her parents’ sake. His friends also goading him towards it because “it’s not like I’ll get grounded for asking my moms to do this.”
This led him to reach out to Reddit and in addition to the problems he already had with the arrangement, commenters pointed out that this doesn’t speak well of how much his girlfriend values him if she sees nothing wrong with hurting his family in this way.
Taking that to heart, he asked his girlfriend how she would feel if his parents made a similar request of her.
But as he said in a follow-up post , “She basically laughed and said it’s not the same thing because that’s a ‘normal couple.'”
And while she tried to backpedal from this revealing statement, it became clear to the boy that it wasn’t just her parents who were uncomfortable with his parents’ relationship.
As a result, he’s now decided to break up with her as he has no interest in being with someone who’s embarrassed by his mothers.
