Let me tell you a secret: I have gray hair. Here, I said it out loud. I started noticing some grays when I was in my late 20s, and truth be told, it was pretty traumatic.
Why? Mainly because gray hair signifies getting old. At least that’s what we as women have heard. I’m here to shout out loud that it isn’t always the case. There are plenty of younger women with gray hair!
And you know what? It’s perfectly okay.
I told you about Alex Duvall, a 33-year old mom from California who started getting grays at 17! Oh yes, you heard that right. Imagine the shock? It must’ve been pretty hard for her.
After years of dyeing her hair and spending thousands of dollars on the process, she had enough. She ditched the dye for good, and she’s a lot happier now. It wasn’t easy, but in the end, it was the right choice for her.
It isn’t an easy decision for any woman.
Whether you are young or old, women feel the pressure to dye their hair. God forbid we let our natural hair shine. Right ladies?
Well, the good news is that times are changing. Now many ladies realize that it’s okay to show off their grays. Movements like the #Grombre hashtag on Instagram or the #FreeTheSilverMovement are normalizing women with gray hair.
Don’t get me wrong — I’m completely on board with any woman who wants to dye their hair.
In fact, I fully support it. Go wild, have fun with it. There are so many awesome hair color options out there. I went from being a blond to a redhead and then back to brown.
However, what I’m trying to highlight is the unfair pressure women face to cover their gray hair.
It is ridiculously wrong!
We call men with silver hair “foxes,” and everyone swoons over their distinguished looks. On the contrary, women with silver hair feel old.
That has to stop! I’m glad to see that ladies are finally fed up and no longer feel bad about their gray strands.
I am starting to make peace with mine. And I’m actually excited when my full gray grows out so I can show it off. How about you? Are you ready for it?
