Movies have been one of the biggest, most celebrated forms of media for decades now. With endless amounts of movies come endless labors of love put in by the entire cast and crew. That love can sometimes come across in not just the broad messaging and look of the film, but in the tiniest of details , too.
Thanks to a Twitter account called @moviedetail , we now know about tons of minuscule secrets hidden in tons of famous films, some of which I’ve gathered here to share with you!
RELATED STORIES
Close to home.
“In The Truman Show (1998), the couple at the table are Daryl Davis and Robert Davis, they are the founders of Seaside, the town where the movie was filmed. They agreed to give filming permission, in return for a cameo.”
A small price to pay for a shooting location, I’d say it’s a fair trade!
Just roll with it.
“In Captain Phillips (2013), the lady performing the medical evaluation didn’t have a script. She’s actually a professional and was told to just go in and do a routine examination, and Tom Hanks would act along accordingly.”
I thought she was just a great extra with a lot of knowledge, but this is even better.
100% organic.
“For Interstellar , Christopher Nolan planted 500 acres of corn just for the film because he did not want to CGI the farm in. After filming, he turned it around and sold the corn and made back profit for the budget.”
There’s definitely something to be said for using practical effects over CGI, something Nolan subscribes to heavily.
The perfect pair.
“In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) […] the A.I. of Peter’s upgraded suit is voiced by Jennifer Connelly. Connelly is married to Paul Bettany who voiced JARVIS, Iron Man’s A.I. and played Vision throughout the MCU.”
A great inside secret that really ties things together, and a great performance!
Subtle tells.
“Look closely in [ Inglourious Basterds ] (2009) and you’ll notice that Col. Hans Landa slyly checks pulses to see who may be especially nervous and possibly lying to him.”
Such a small detail that says so much about a character and their personality, a great addition!
Casting a shadow.
” Batman Returns , 1992: Selina’s eyeglasses shadow project the Catwoman mask on her face.”
Tricks that use lighting like this are some of my personal favorites as they’re always amazingly clever. I’m blown away every time I learn of a new one!
Talent recognized.
“In Parasite (2019), there is a scene where the son teaches his dad (played by Song Kang-Ho) how to act. This was included in the movie as a deliberate inside joke as Song is considered one of the greatest Korean actors of all time.”
Full circle.
“In Avengers Endgame (2019), Harley, the boy who helped Tony in his garage in Iron Man 3, is visible at Tony’s funeral.”
Lots of people expressed that they didn’t recognize him while first watching the film, just to realize later who it was and be amazed at the level of thought put into this scene.
Correct crediting.
“In Pulp Fiction (1994) during the diner robbery, the manager says ‘I’m not a hero, I’m just a coffee shop-‘ and is cut off before he can finish his sentence. In the credits, his character is listed as ‘Coffee Shop’.”
After all this time.
“In Hercules (1997), the cape attached to Hercules’ armor is actually the shawl that is given to him by his adoptive mother.”
This is such a sweet detail that definitely went over my head during my views of this movie as a child, but it’s nice to know now!
What could have been.
“In Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018) one of the billboards is for the movie From Dusk Till Shaun which in real life ‘was a proposed sequel for Shaun Of The Dead which replaced the zombies with vampires but was never made’ (Schwerdtfeger, 2017).”
What I wouldn’t give to be able to watch that movie.
Strict branding.
“In [ Knives Out ] (2019), the murderer never holds an iPhone while most of the innocent characters do. This is because Apple has a policy where bad guys are not allowed to use their products, according to director Rian Johnson.”
Past and present.
“Even though Deadpool 2 happens in 2018, the X-Men version that appears is the 1980’s, that could explain why in [the first Deadpool ] when Colossus mentions Xavier, Deadpool says, ‘McAvoy or Stewart?? These timelines can get so confusing’.”
As a huge X-Men fan, this scene in the second movie made my night!
Look who’s back.
“The guy who livestreams Shang-Chi’s fight on the bus in the movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) was also seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) as a street vendor.”
Hey, sometimes extra’s do such a stellar job that you just have to bring them back!
The real thing.
“In [ Thor: The Dark World ] (2013), the woman that Thor kisses at the end isn’t Natalie Portman; instead it’s Chris Hemsworth’s wife Elsa Pataky, wearing a wig.”
If given the option, then yeah, what actor wouldn’t want to kiss their spouse over a random stranger?
Seeing double.
“In The Matrix (1999) ‘Woman in the red dress’ scene, most of the extras are twins. The Wachowski [sisters] did this to create a sense of unrealism.”
And boy, did it work! The Wachowskis have a great mind for making small decisions that feel impactful like this.
Realistic fantasy.
“In Peter Rabbit 2 (2021), you can see a rabbit holding a boom mic in the bowl’s reflection.”
Now, this detail is just plain cute! A quirky little joke that’ll get a chuckle out of any adults watching this movie with their kids.
A glimpse into the future.
“In Pulp Fiction (1994) Mia’s description of Fox Force 5 lines perfectly up with the assassins from Kill Bill (2003) and Kill Bill 2 (2004).”
The original replies pointed outa few inconsistencies, but even with them, this is pretty amazing!
Cast to character.
“In Mulan (1998), Mulan touches her hair a lot because the animators noticed that Mulan’s voice actor, Ming-Na Wen, touched her hair a lot while recording. So, they added it to the character. (confirmed by Ming-Na Wen on [Twitter]).”
This is a very touching detail, and lovely knowing that they thought the voice actress fit the character so well that they wanted to make them even more alike!
Special significance.
“In Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), a billboard can be seen promoting the AFSP – American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Zack Snyder’s daughter Autumn, whom the film is dedicated to, took her own life during production of the movie in 2017.”
