Thank Gosh Women Over 50 Aren't Portrayed As Grandmas In The Media Anymore

Look, it's no secret I love all my shows from back in the day, as the kids would say. Golden Girls, Dawson's Creek, and The X Files, but let's be real — these shows featured women in their 50s playing much older characters. It seems like if you were a woman over fifty in Hollywood, you might as well play a grandma forever!

Thankfully, these standards have changed and women are allowed to express themselves however they want!

Before we get into the nitty gritty, I want to start off by saying that there is nothing wrong with being a grandma or choosing to dress more conservatively.

The beauty of being a woman in 2021 is getting to decide what your identity means to you, not what society deems acceptable for your age.

Wearing whatever you want, doing whatever you want and being whoever you want is so important for every woman, regardless of age!

I got to thinking about the portrayal of women over 50 in the media after seeing this tweet from Danny Pellegrino.

In it, the podcast host points out that Grams from Dawson's Creek was only 57-years-old when she filmed the pilot, which is just one year younger than Demi Moore, who was recently snapped in a stunning swimsuit pic.

At 58-years-old, Demi has no ounce of Grams to be found.

As we know now, the cast of *Golden Girls* (for the most part) were in their sixties playing women in their fifties.

Betty White was 63 when she first started playing fan-favorite Rose Nylund, a character meant to be 55-years-old. Bea Arthur was the same age as Betty when she was first introduced to fans as Dorothy Zbornak, also meant to be in her early fifties.

Rue McClanahan was 52 at the beginning of the series, just a year younger than her character, Blanche Devereaux, was meant to be. Of course, the most dramatic age gap was Estelle Getty, who was in her sixties playing a woman in her eighties!

This then got me thinking about how many powerful women over the age of fifty have been allowed to blossom and prosper.

At 55-years-old, Halle Berry continues to stun fans with chic red carpet outfits, bold new hair looks, and of course, amazing movie roles that have nothing to do with being a grandma.

Did you know,

Of course, we can't talk about fierce women over 50 without talking about Jennifer Lopez.

At 52-years-old, Jennifer is at the height of her career. Truly, this triple threat has never been more relevant than she is now, which is saying a lot considering she's been in the business for over 2 decades!

Speaking of women who are thriving, I'd be remised to speak about strong, powerful, older women without mentioning Jamie Lee Curtis.

I will personally never be over her Golden Globes 2021 look, and you shouldn't be either!

It's a wonderful time to be a strong woman over fifty — the world is truly your oyster!
