All couples have a different way of managing their finances . Some couples combine their bank accounts and go through life sharing their money, while other couples have separate accounts. There are some couples who split everything evenly, down the middle, and then there are those who don’t really care about who pays for what.
Different couples operate differently with what works best for them. But, not everything works for the individuals in the relationship.
Recently, one boyfriend wrote into Reddit seeking advice about his girlfriend.
The boyfriend wrote into Reddit seeking advice about a vacation he and his girlfriend had taken with his family.
He shared that the vacation was “quite expensive”.
And that his girlfriend needed to take a second job to make it work, as she is a teacher and only makes $45,000.
However, the boyfriend said he makes substantially more.
The boyfriend also shares that he works in IT and makes six figures. However, he said that in their relationship, they split things 50/50 and that is something they have always done.
However, this trip became a big issue for the couple, due to finances.
The boyfriend and his brother planned the trip together.
“My girlfriend, myself, my parents, and my brother and his wife all went on vacation in another country a week ago.”
“My brother and I were the ones who did most of the planning of the itinerary although we did ask everyone else for input,” he wrote on the post.
When on vacation, his girlfriend began to “sit things out.”
“There were a few times on the vacation when she did not go on outings with us- wine tasting/scuba diving/etc.”
“She also would only eat 2 meals a day, simply stating that she was on a budget. My family does favor more high-end ( expensive ) places,” he continued.
He explained that even his parents found her behavior to be strange.
“My parents thought it was very strange that she only eats 2 meals a day although normally she eats 3,” he wrote.
When they returned home, he asked about her behaviors and why she was skipping meals when he knew she was hungry.
The girlfriend broke down crying saying that she couldn’t afford everything they were doing.
“She got teary eyed and said that 3 meals a day wasn’t fiscally feasible for her and neither were the outings that she chose not to go on (she went on 3 of 6 outings). She said she was not expecting everything to cost so much and she was overwhelmed,” he wrote.
The boyfriend said he felt bad, but also doesn’t understand “why she came.”
“She also said she doesn’t know if this is going to work long term if she is expected to go on vacations like that with people who make so much more than her.”
“I feel bad that I did not pick up on her discomfort sooner.”
“But we did agree to split everything 50/50 and I don’t know why she agreed to come if the cost was an issue,” he said.
People on Reddit completely ripped the boyfriend apart, saying he’s a huge a**hole for his reaction and expectation.
“You make three times what she does. You knew she had to take a second job to be able to go. You planned the holiday/the activities.”
“She even said while you were there that she could only afford to eat two meals a day.”
“Don’t plan for your budget when you know she makes so much less than you,” one person wrote.
