“It takes a village to raise a child.”
This is something we all know to be true, and parents often lean heavily on friends and family members to help them on their journey.
But sometimes, as a recent Twitter thread pointed out, these requests can cross the line from reasonable to absolutely ridiculous.
It started with a local social media app.
The app is intended for neighbors to stay in touch about stuff that’s going on in the neighborhood.
Jack Jokinen tweeted that he saw an unusual request on the app from an expectant parent. This dad to be wanted more than a little help. In fact, he wanted his neighbors to be personal chefs.
Maybe it isn’t so bad.
Jack wanted to be charitable, and it did occur to him that maybe the guy was just asking for leftovers or food that would otherwise be thrown out or something. That could be reasonable, right?
However, after delving further into the mess, he found that these expectant parents fully expected their neighbors to create custom recipes.

Keep in mind that this is just one page of several that the dad-to-be posted. I mean, at least he provided links to each recipe. Still, there’s no discussion of the fact that this is super weird and super entitled. And no, there’s no talk of compensating his neighbors for being personal chefs.

Predictably, the responses to Jack’s tweet thread were pretty entertaining. I truly do wonder if the guy asking for all these fancy recipes has ever tried to make them himself.

I kind of doubt this one. I mean, have you ever read on Pinterest that attempting to outsource all of your parental labor to strangers is something that might work?
Maybe we could all be a little more kind.
As one user pointed out, it’s impossible to know about this family’s current situation. After all, they could be dealing with challenges that nobody has considered.
The requests actually got worse.
The guy points out that if neighbors can’t cook meals for him, then perhaps it isn’t too much to ask that they come around and do all of his chores for him.
I mean, the absolute audacity…
What’s next?
They’re asking for custom-cooked meals and household labor. At this point, directly asking for cash almost seems like the more reasonable request.
This is a fair point.
While there’s a lot here that feels pretty ridiculous, this comment sums it up nicely: you can be entertained or annoyed by this, but at the end of the day, nobody has to do anything to help if they don’t want to.
