Although there are many people out there who would consider their marriages to be one of the greatest things that ever happened to them, that’s not to say that they don’t take a lot of work.
After all, when you’re used to living a certain way, it can be hard to adjust to the understanding that it’s not all about your own needs anymore. And with that adjustment can come some awkward periods, big mistakes , and times that we left the ones we love worried sick without realizing it.
But while it’s hard to predict what kind of problems can spring up in a marriage, the good news is that there are also no shortage of creative solutions to them. And we can definitely emphasize “creative” in the case of one couple’s story.
For a long time, 48-year-old Jayne Tapper of Devon, England didn’t see much of her husband in the evenings.
As she told The Daily Mail , this was because he made a habit of sneaking off to the local pub, which didn’t leave her with much quality time with him.
As Tapper put it, “My husband Paul, an engineer, had always loved popping down to our local, and I could never seem to keep him at home.”
But eventually, those nights he spent “in the doghouse” gave her an idea.
In Tapper’s words, “And so I got thinking – why not create my own pub, become my own landlady and then I can really tell people – my husband’s in the doghouse!”
And since the couple had already planned to have their backyard leveled out for the equivalent of $20,000, it seemed like the perfect time to make her backyard pub idea a reality.
So they shelled out another $3,700 to have the cabin you see here built and then spent another $1,300 to turn it into a “proper pub.”
This involved having a full bar and fridges installed, but she also spent a large portion of that money on getting a Space Invaders arcade game as well.
Still, it didn’t cost quite as much as it could have since a friend was able to make that nifty sign for her and others donated other items like a couch, a TV, and the materials needed to insulate the cabin.
The name “The Doghouse Inn” was also more fitting than it seemed because the couple has three basset hounds.
And while it took a big investment and about five months of work, it seems that Tapper’s Doghouse Inn has proved successful.
Not only do both Tapper and her husband love spending time in there, but Paul has also started bringing his friends there for some raucous parties.

It’s also ended up saving them hundreds of pounds that would otherwise go to the local pub and their three children have seen a similar benefit to hanging out there all the time.
It’s certainly hard to think of a better way to be in the doghouse.
