Kelly Clarkson has finally addressed the excessive backlash she and her fellow coach on The Voice , John Legend, have been receiving over their rendition of “Baby It’s Cold Outside”.
As you’ve probably already heard, “The Voice” coaches, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend decided to step up and remake the classic Christmas tune, “Baby It’s Cold Outside”.
Their rendition, however, was not well-received…
The version of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” that we’re all familiar with, sang by Dean Martin, as you may recall, was ripped from the airwaves last year.
While it’s impossible to say for certain what the song was written about all those years ago, many argue that the song is an ode to sexual assault, and therefore, not appropriate for radio.
Here are some of the original lyrics in question:
“My mother will start to worry (beautiful what’s your hurry?)”
“But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)”
“Say, what’s in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)”
It’s possible that the song was meant to be sexy and playful at the time it was written, but it’s safe to say it hasn’t exactly aged well.
Enter: Kelly Clarkson and Jonh Legend.

Understandably, Kelly and John thought it was the perfect time to step up to the plate and change-up the lyrics to something less controversial.
Ironically, their remake has stirred up a ton of controversy.
The new lyrics look like this:
“What will my friends think (I think they should rejoice)”
“If I have one more drink? (It’s your body, and your choice)”
“I really can’t stay (Baby it’s cold outside)”
“I’ve gotta go away (I can call you a ride.)”
While Kelly and John probably thought they were doing the right thing, people were absolutely livid over it.
They were dragged by Dean Martin’s daughter, Sharon Osbourne, and countless fans.
There was seriously an aggressive amount of backlash over this.
Now that the dust has settled (mostly), Kelly has finally addressed the criticism with John’s wife, Chrissy Teigen, on her talk show, “The Kelly Clarkson Show”.
“Did you not hear that John and I ruined Christmas recently?,” Kelly said. “I was like, ‘How did I mess that up?”
“People got so mad!”
“John had this idea . . . Both John and I have cut the original, we like the original, but we noticed that a lot of people didn’t,” she explained.
“So we were like, ‘Let’s give them another option,'” she went on. “And apparently we killed Christmas!”
Chrissy chimed in as well, seemingly especially annoyed over the comments Sharon Osbourne made about the song on The Talk , calling it “ridiculous”.
“Sharon assumed that you burned them all in the backyard or something,” Chrissy added, rolling her eyes.
“And that you can never listen to the original again.”
“I don’t care what you guys do, but to be like, ‘I hate this now.’ Oh my god, get over it.”
“I love Sharon !,” Kelly replied, explaining why her negative reaction to the song was particularly disappointing to her.
“That’s why I thought it was so weird. She took it so personal.”
“I just thought it was weird . . . I’m trying to understand it. There are so many issues in the world right now.”
“If I can’t have my creepy song, it’s not Christmas!,” Chrissy joked. “I want date-rapey songs!”
“The original doesn’t even offend me,” Kelly added. “I just was like, ‘Cool, we’ll do another version.'”
