A bronze statue representing a famous hug MLK and Coretta gave each other was unveiled on January 13th, 2023. The work of art was called ‘The Embrace’. It was unveiled for the first time in the Freedom Plaza of the Boston Common. A large crowd, including some of King’s family members, was present for the honor.

The monument was made by the sculptor Hank Willis Thomas. He shared that ‘The Embrace’ was designed after a 1964 photo of MLK hugging Coretta after he won the Nobel Peace Prize. However, instead of doing a full-body statue, he decided to only show off the hug.

Mary Powell played matchmaker by sliding Coretta’s number to MLK. They were both studying in the same city. During their first date, MLK fell in love at first sight but Coretta fell in love after their first party. The duo later started courting.

During one of his parents’ visits to Boston, his father, Daddy King, talked about other beautiful women MLK dated in Atlanta. Coretta stood up for herself, and so did MLK, announcing to his mother, Mama King, that Coretta was going to be his wife. MLK’s Legacy Continues Through His Children
Their third child, Dexter Scott King was born in 1961. That same month, the University of Georgia was integrated. Their youngest child, Bernice, was only 15 days old when MLK was jailed in Birmingham. MLK was assassinated on April 4, 1968. However, his wife and children continued his legacy.
