The Texas teen accused of fatally stabbing another student at a high school track meet in April has now been indicted for first-degree murder. Both the charged student and the victim were 17 years old.
The district attorney announced the news

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced on Tuesday, June 24, that Karmelo Sincere Anthony was indicted by a grand jury for the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, which took place on April 2, 2025 at a high school track meet in Frisco.
Both of the boys were 17

Both Karmelo Sincere Anthony and Austin Metcalf were 17 years old at the time of the incident. The Texas criminal justice system considers 17-year-olds to be adults.
In Willis’ announcement, he described Metcalf’s death as a “violent loss” which left the community “shaken by what happened.”
Willis spoke about the charge

The distinct attorney said, “For weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury. Today, I summarized that evidence, and I asked the Grand Jury to return a first degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony — which they did.”
The case will next be taken to court for trial.
They’re aware it’s a sensitive case

“We know this case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond. That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core,” the district attorney said.
“But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle. That’s what we’re committed to. And that’s exactly what this case deserves.”
Willis also spoke about Austin’s loved ones

“We’re also mindful of Austin’s family, and everyone who loved him. Please keep them in your thoughts — and, if you’re willing, in your prayers as well,” the district attorney added.
Willis also noted that “a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.” Anthony has been out of custody since being bailed out for $250,000.
The attack happened at a high school track meet

The incident between the two boys occured after an altercation where Metcalf asked Anthony to move out from under a tent at Kuykendall Stadium, which was set up for members of his high school track team that day.
An eyewitness told police Anthony allegedly told Metcalf, “Touch me and see what happened,” while reaching into his backpack.
The eyewitness said Metcalf then touched Anthony

According to the probable cause affidavit obtained by People, Metcalf then touched Anthony, which prompted Anthony to allegedly tell him to punch him and see what happens.
Anthony allegedly pulled a knife out of his bag when Metcalf went to physically move him, stabbing Metcalf in the chest and fleeing from the tent.
Anthony allegedly told officers, “I was protecting myself,” per the affidavit.
