Sometimes, side characters from movies become even more famous than the main characters. Even those who are only onscreen for brief moments can have huge impacts on the viewers, especially when they’re beloved little squirrels with one single-minded goal to speak of: getting that acorn.
Of course, I’m talking about Scrat from the Ice Age franchise, whose determined and dogged efforts to get the ever-elusive acorn have been entertaining audiences since the first movie’s release twenty years ago in 2002.
Scrat is one of the most famous parts of the ‘Ice Age’ franchise, even getting his own spinoff series, ‘Scrat Tales.’

Scrat’s appearances in the films surround his pursuit of an acorn, which end either disastrously at worst or just unsuccessfully at best.
However, now that Blue Sky Studios, the animation house behind the Ice Age franchise, has gotten shut down , some people wondered what was going to become of Scrat and his beloved acorn.
Blue Sky Studios had the answer ready for us in a video they uploaded to YouTube simply called ‘The End.’
The 35-second video, originally shared to an unlisted YouTube page , came along with the caption, “In the final days of Blue Sky Studios, a small team of artists came together to do one final shot. This shot is a farewell, a send-off on our own terms,” and shows Scrat seeing an acorn, grabbing the acorn, and then eating it happily, with none of the disaster and calamity we’ve come to expect from this endeavor.
Fans were understandably emotional at the farewell video.
“Watched this over and over. So many little details – the quality of the work is outstanding. Great way to wrap it up,” one fan tweeted .
“So nostalgic, happy and sad at same time,” added another.
There was another farewell message for Scrat lovers at the end of the ‘Scrat Tales’ spinoff series.
“Scrat was the first character to appear in Blue Sky’s first movie, ‘Ice Age,'” the message reads. “Like him, we were reaching for something that might have been unattainable. Yet time after time both we and Scrat have managed to get our arms around versions of that elusive acorn.”
“Thank you from the bottom of our collective Blue Sky hearts for being with us all these years,” they concluded.
While it’ll be sad to see Blue Sky go, we’re happy that they came together to give Scrat one final, proper send-off! How did you feel about the video? Let us know in the comments!
