It might be surprising to hear after the election cycle we’ve just had, but not everyone wants to broadcast their political opinions to everyone they know at all times. While we love celebrities who speak out about the stuff that matters to them, we also have a lot of respect for celebrities who believe it’s not their place, like actor Kurt Russell.

Having appeared in films like Escape From New York, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, and The Christmas Chronicles , his career has been pretty expansive over the last 58 years, but there’s one thing he doesn’t touch on very much: politics.

In a new interview alongside his longtime partner, Goldie Hawn, Kurt has opened up about why he feels actors shouldn’t voice their political opinions.
“I’ve always been someone who felt we are court jesters. That’s what we do,” Kurt said . “As far as I’m concerned, you should step away from saying anything so that you can still be seen by the audience in any character.”
“There’s no reason entertainers can’t learn just as much as anybody else about a subject, whatever it is,” Kurt went on.
“But I think that what’s sad about it is that they lose their status as a court jester. And I’m a court jester. That’s what I was born to do,” he continued.
Goldie spoke up about the subject as well, saying that court jesters “aren’t always funny.”
“A court jester is the only one who can walk into the castle and put the king down as long as he doesn’t hit too close to home,” Goldie added.
“I think that’s been a big, important part of all cultures throughout history, and I’d like to see it stay in ours,” she said.
