With the series finale of Modern Family coming up, Sarah Hyland is holding nothing back.
The actress just admitted what a lot of fans have already been thinking: she’s unhappy with her “mother” storyline.

That’s a super difficult reality for the actors and actresses to face — especially Sarah Hyland.
In case you didn’t know, the actress played Haley Dunphy on the award-winning show for the past 11 years.
She started when she was 16 and she’s now 29!
Over the years, her character has gone through some major character developments.
When we first met Haley, she was, well, a brat who didn’t care for anyone but herself.
At one point, she even got arrested!
But by the end of the series, Haley has transformed into quite the accomplished woman.
Thanks to the writers, show creators, and Sarah, Haley is now married, has a job she loves, and she’s even a loving mother to her twin children!
These are Poppy and George who she had in the season 10 finale last year with husband, Dylan Marshall (Reid Ewing).
However, that’s not to say that things are totally smooth-sailing.
A few months ago, Sarah threw some serious shade to Modern Family …
And it all had to do with her being M.I.A. during a lot of the show’s final season.
It all started when Phil Dunphy’s dad (Fred Willard) died during the episode titled “Legacy.”
When this happened, it wasn’t just fans who were shocked and saddened.
Hyland soon revealed on Instagram that she had no idea her fictional grandpa would die.
“I don’t read scripts of episodes of Modern Family that I’m not in, so I just found out that my grandpa’s dead along with all of you,” she said on her Instagram Story.
“I still feel special,” she added, but she wasn’t afraid to throw some shade, either.
“I guess I should’ve put a spoiler alert for Grandpa Frank dying, but I was just caught off-guard. Like, as his granddaughter, you think I’d be invited to his funeral.”
Another time, she threw shade when she answering some fan questions.
Fans were also upset with what the show had done to her character.
“I think they ruined Hailey’s storyline and character development so badly with that pregnancy and with Dylan, they’ve had no choice but to limit your appearances as a way to do damage control,” one tweeted .
Now, months later, Sarah has opened up about this disappointment again during her May cover story with ‘Cosmopolitan.’
“I don’t think I’m processing,” she said about the show ending.
“I haven’t really felt the sadness yet.”
But when it came to Haley’s lack of screentime, she had *lots* of thoughts on that.
She said that she wished audiences could have seen Haley “own her [expletive] in the fashion world—becoming a [expletive] stylist or brand mogul or anything like that.”
This led her to feel unhappy with her character’s mother storyline since it lacked a lot of depth.
“There are so many amazing mothers who are also hard workers and excel at their jobs and kill it every day in both aspects,” Sarah explained.
“That would have been a really cool thing to see, especially from someone like Haley,” she added.
Agreed!
Thankfully, being an actor means that she might find herself playing a role like that in the future.
For now, though, she’s not too worried about being out of work with ‘Modern Family’ ending.
“The thing as an actor is it’s like, ‘Will I have a job tomorrow?’ With Modern Family ending, it’s like, Oh, great. I’m never going to work again. I’m going to have to sell everything and live out of a shoebox.”
One thing that’s keeping her mind of this is her fiancé Wells Adams and their upcoming nuptials!
The Bachelorette star put a ring on it back in June 2019.
They had been dating for two years before that after Wells slid into her DMs.
“It’s the most millennial thing in the entire world,” Sarah said about it. “I kind of want to gag at it.”
