Trends come and go, and we’re all grateful for that. Because some trends are questionable even when they’re in style, and many of us begrudgingly jump on the bandwagon in the name of fashion. As we prepare to head into a new decade, let’s all collectively bid a heartfelt adieu to these beauty trends from the 2010s.
1. Tanning beds
It’s crazy to think that tanning beds were still a trend in the 2010s, even though we already knew (and still know) how dangerous they are. I’m not sure who to blame for this, but I’m looking in the general direction of the cast of Jersey Shore .
2. Heavy eyeliner
There’s a fine line between looking rock ‘n’ roll and looking like a zombie who’s ready to eat someone’s brains. Turns out, that line is dark kohl eyeliner, and we’re glad to see it go.
3. Contouring
Let’s be honest, so few of us were even able to get this thing right. Half the time I ended up looking like a clown who didn’t blend her makeup properly. I, for one, am thrilled to kick this trend to the door.
4. Glitter eye shadow
I’m old enough to have lived through this trend in the ’90s. I certainly didn’t think I’d have to navigate it again in the 2010s. Plus, when those things get in your eye, it’s almost blinding.
5. Chemical hair straighteners
As a curly-haired gal, I can’t tell you how problematic the whole straight-hair trend was for me. But my own personal issues aside, chemical hair straightening treatments are so damaging to hair and potentially dangerous to your overall health. Here’s to embracing your natural body in 2020.
6. Excessive highlighter
There was a renewed interest in glowy skin over the last 10 years, but so few were able to properly highlight their faces without looking like a light bulb.
7. Extra nail art
Nails had such a moment over the last decade that they even had their own red carpet at awards events. But that prompted some artists to take nail art one, or many, steps too far. I’m looking forward to scaling back my tips this decade. (And I’m glad to bid farewell to the nail cam.)
8. Two-tone hair
I mean, I’m not even sure what to say about this trend other than, why??
9. Black lipstick
While this might have a striking effect on the runway and in beauty editorials, it’s just not practical for the every day mortal. Can you imagine how hard it is to remove?
10. Squiggle eyebrows
Eyebrows had a moment in the 2010s and it’s one that hasn’t stopped. While I’m all for full, even bushy, brows, these squiggle ones are just too weird. Plus, they make you look like you’re always confused. (Which frankly, I am by this trend.)
11. Spider lashes
I’m not sure why anyone would want their mascara to look like a fail, but I’m sure glad this is on its way out.
12. Extreme beards
Look, I get it: men feel somewhat left out when it comes to beauty trends. After all, they don’t really do much beyond cleansing their skin and combing their hair. But the whole extreme facial hair trend got way out of control over the last 10 years.
13. Ombré hair
I know this one isn’t all that bad, but it looks so dated to me now. I’m glad to see it go.
14. Neon nails
I realize the spectrum of colors is finite, but there’s no need to wade into tacky neon territory.
15. Skin whitening creams
Ladies and gents, our natural skin tones are beautiful. Let’s embrace them in all their differing colors and stop trying to make ourselves more white.
16. The Korean skincare routine
There’s no question that the beauty industry has had its eyes fixed on Korean skincare for the last few years. And for good reason: their technologies are very advanced. But I just don’t have time to go through a 10- to 17-step skincare routine every day. I have a job, people.
17. Extreme eyelash extensions
Can you even see through those things?
