He was born Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark. He joined the British Royal Navy at the age of 18 when he began corresponding with the then-Princess Elizabeth.
Phillip was the longest-serving consort in British history, having gained the title in 1952, although he had stopped attending public engagements in 2017 at the age of 96.
"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle," the statement read.
"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss. Further announcements will be made in due course," it ended.
While fans shared their condolences and grief at the loss of Prince Philip, many wondered what happens following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.
According to The Independent, following Philip's passing, flags lowered to half-mast, newsreaders will wear black, and Members of Parliament will wear black armbands.
Her Majesty The Queen will enter an official period of mourning where her state affairs will be put on hold.
However, the mourning period can be extended another 30 days if the Queen desires.
The Independent reports that it is likely Prince Philip will have a military funeral, given his service in the Royal Navy.
The line of succession remains as follows: Prince Charles is first in line for the throne, followed by Prince William, and Prince William's three children, George, Charlotte, and Louis.
