Even though I’m not a whiz in the kitchen, I still enjoy trying new things and improving my skills whenever I have a chance.
If you love to bake and are always looking for ways to take your creations to the next level, give the tips and tricks below a try!
1. Get room temperature eggs in no time.
Rather than waiting overnight, place your eggs in a bowl of warm water for three minutes. This hack is great for all of you spur-of-the-moment bakers!
2. Cookie cutters are good for other things.
Like cake decorating! Use them to create fun designs on cakes with a variety of ingredients, like sprinkles, chocolate chips, or powdered sugar.
3. If you don’t have cookie cutters, you can also use lace.
Place a pretty piece of detailed lace over your desserts and cover them with powdered sugar. When you remove it, you’ll be left with a unique design!
4. A fresh cookie is the best kind of cookie.
To keep your baked treats fresh, store them in an airtight container with a single slice of bread. Works like a charm!
5. Make homemade fondant.
A simple mixture of Jell-O, marshmallows, confectioner’s sugar, and water creates a fun rainbow of fondant that you can use to decorate all of your tasty desserts.
6. Set those cake pops.
You don’t need fancy equipment to create a collection of delicious cake pops. For setting them without a hassle, all you need is an upside-down colander and some paper towel!
7. Prevent mess with paper plates.
When working with a hand or stand mixer, use a paper plate to cover the bowl in order to prevent your ingredients from flying out and making a huge mess everywhere.
8. The next time you want to bake cookies, grab a muffin tin.
I don’t know if they’ll always stay soft and fluffy, but this trick will definitely prevent them from spreading out.
9. If you find yourself short a heart-shaped cake pan, you’re not out of luck.
All you really need is a square pan, around pan, and a bit of willingness to get creative.
10. To prevent soggy-bottomed muffins, use flour.
If you’re going to use frozen fruit in your pies, cakes, muffins, or any other baking ventures, coating it in a bit of flour will help absorb the excess water.
11. Make your desserts fancy with…a potato peeler?
Yup! You can use a standard potato peeler to create the prettiest little chocolate peels, which work perfectly as garnish for any baked good.
12. Make your cake a tiny bit healthier.
While cake will never be as healthy as a serving of fresh fruit or veggies, you can improve it by substituting the oil with some unsweetened applesauce!
13. It’s so annoying when you forget to soften your butter.
This hack is the perfect solution to getting it nice and warm for baking, and all you need is a glass cup and some boiling water!
14. Easily melt your chocolate in the slow cooker.
Putting your chocolate into mason jars is a great way to get a lot done at once, and you don’t have a messy pot to scrub out after.
15. Try using a syringe filled with frosting to decorate your gingerbread men this season.
You won’t struggle with the fine lines you want to get for those expertly decorated cookies.
16. Turn that rock-hard brown sugar into normal again.
Just place it in a microwave-safe dish, and cover it with a moist paper towel. Heat for 20 seconds, and you’ll be good to go!
17. Before you put your cake in the oven, carefully drop it on the counter a few times.
It removes any air bubbles and will help ensure that your cake bakes evenly.
18. Blow guests away with a perfect ganache cake.
To get smooth and shiny ganache, grab a blow dryer, and put it on the highest heat setting and the lowest speed. Use the blow dryer as you work around your cake with a spreader tool.
19. If you’re fresh out of cupcake liners, parchment paper makes the perfect backup.
Simply press them down into your cupcake pan, and try using a small glass to help them keep their shape until you pour the batter in.
20. Use household items to create interesting pie crust designs.
A pair of tongs, a corkscrew, a small measuring spoon, and even a pearl necklace are all perfect candidates for this task.
