'SNL's Michael Che Honors Late Grandmother By Paying The Rent For 160 Public Housing Units

There's a lot of bad news out there regarding the coronavirus pandemic, and while it's definitely important that we stay informed, it's also important to recognize that there's good news out there too. Today's good news story comes from Michael Che.

Information about the coronavirus pandemic is rapidly changing and Diply is committed to providing the most recent data as it becomes available. Some of the information in this story may have changed since publication, and we encourage readers to use online resources from CDC and WHO to stay up to date on the latest information surrounding COVID-19.

Che is a comedian and writer best known for his work on 'Saturday Night Live.'

Che is most well-known for his work co-hosting Weekend Update on SNL with Colin Jost, but the two are also the co-head writers for the entire show as well.

Che recently and tragically lost his grandmother to COVID-19.

“Last night my grandmother passed away from the coronavirus,” Che wrote on April 6th. “I’m doing ok, considering. I’m obviously very hurt and angry that she had to go through all that pain alone."

"But I’m also happy that she’s not in pain anymore," he continued.

"And I also feel guilty for feeling happy. Basically the whole gamut of complex feelings everybody else has losing someone very close and special. I’m not unique. But it’s still scary," he concluded his post on his Instagram story.

Che has revealed in a new Instagram post that he will be honoring his grandmother in an incredible way.

“It’s crazy to me that residents of public housing are still expected to pay their rent when so many New Yorkers can’t even work,” he began his post.

“Obviously, I can’t offer much help by myself."

"But in the spirit and memory of my late grandmother, I’m paying one month’s rent for all 160 apartments in the NYCHA building she lived in," he replied, referring to the public housing apartment building.

“I know that’s just a drop in the bucket,” he added.

“So I really hope the city has a better plan for debt forgiveness for all the people in public housing, at the very least.”

What an amazing move from Michael Che! I'm sure everyone who lives in that building is extremely grateful.
