It’s finally summer! Well, almost. That means it’s time to dust off your balcony, pull that outdoor furniture out of storage, and ponder if you have it in you to develop a green thumb (you do).
Whether you’re a seasoned pro at balcony life or are new to this whole tiny outdoor space thing, here’s some great ways to give your place a boost.
Swap those floors out.
Not a fan of the floor cards you’ve been dealt? No worries. Places like Ikea sell really nice, super affordable outdoor floor tiles that you can lay right over the existing concrete.
Cover up with an outdoor rug.
Floor tiles not really your thing? No worries, outdoor rugs are also a great way to change up your floor space! It also helps make your balcony feel homier and cozier.
Create a workspace on your balcony.
If you’re a work from home type (like me!), then you’ll love the idea of a balcony desk (I do). This one attaches to your balcony railing, and you can get it from Oddity Mall .
Get you a lot of plants.
Plants really are the heart and soul of a balcony. They bring in some much-needed greenery to otherwise pretty empty spaces, and they’re a great way to add some personality!
Sew yourself a hammock.

If you’re able to hang things and you’re into DIY-ing, then making yourself a hanging chair might be fun to try! Rachel Denbow at A Beautiful Mess put together a really easy to follow tutorial here !
Don’t be afraid to get cozy.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: chairs that are big enough to be beds are what balcony dreams are made of. If you have the space, cozy pieces like this will really up your balcony game.
Make your own balcony bed.
It’s actually pretty simple! You can make a balcony bed out of anything, from cushions and the palettes featured here to a straight-up inflatable bed. I have done the inflatable bed thing and I highly recommend it.
Add some lights: string-light free edition.

If string lights aren’t your thing, what about these amazing table lights? No, seriously, look at this table lamp from Ikea. Look at it. It’s solar powered and it’s pink and gold and I NEED IT.
And now, for the string lights.
Because we can’t talk about outdoor spaces without talking about string lights. They really make your balcony feel like a party space, but without all the sweaty strangers and weird food. I said what I said.
Create your own balcony garden.
How cute is this? Your balcony is a great place to start, say, an herb garden! Deck yours out with some hanging planters and fun pot colors!
Hang fabrics to give your balcony some privacy.
Or some fantasy! Fabric is a really great way to close off your area from your neighbor’s, or to give your balcony a bit of whimsy. I love the idea of these sheer curtains framing the planter!
Don’t be afraid of adding art!
Art doesn’t have to stay indoors. Find outdoor-friendly materials to make your own art with, or find some pieces that can hold up in the rain!
Outdoor storage doesn’t have to be ugly.
Pieces that can withstand water are ideal, so keep an eye out for plastic and wood shelves. You can keep your plant supplies somewhere cuter than, say, the ground. Score.
Create a balcony bar.
Same concept as the balcony desk, but with added alcohol. Balcony bars are usually wooden, and usually are paired with yummy snacks and cozy chairs.
