Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the title role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer for seven seasons, knows exactly who she’d like to see play Buffy in a potential reboot of the series.
In a new book about the iconic sci-fi/horror/comedy series, Gellar gave some intriguing thoughts as to what direction she’d go with casting.

In an interview that appeared in Into Every Generation a Slayer is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts by Evan Ross Katz, Gellar explored the possibilities that a reboot of the series might bring.
She played Buffy for the series’ entire run.
The TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer , based on the 1992 movie of the same name, featured Gellar in the title role as Buffy Summers. The hit series ran for five seasons on The WB and finished its run with two seasons on UPN.
She’s made her choice for the next Buffy very clear.
“I vote Zendaya,” she told the author when asked who might fill Buffy’s shoes next. Judy Benz, who played Darla on the show, agreed, saying it would be “amazing” if Zendaya was chosen for the role.
Zendaya’s star is on the rise.
The former child star has made her mark more recently in Spider-Man: Homecoming and its sequels, the Space Jam reboot, and 2021’s sci-fi epic Dune . She’s also starred on the small screen in HBO’s Euphoria .
Will it ever happen?
There’s been word of 20th Century Fox developing a reboot of the series, with a Black Buffy, since 2018. Original creator Joss Whedon was said to be on board, along with several original writers and producers.
It seems to be stuck in development hell.
Producer Monica Owusu-Breen, who’s attached to the Buffy reboot, issued this tweet back in 2018. But since the flurry of news, there’s been next to no information regarding a potential reboot.
We’d love to see Zendaya in this role.
Reboots are all the rage in Hollywood, so it stands to reason that one of the most beloved series of the ’90s would be due. An actor like Zendaya, with her sci-fi accolades, would be a great fit for the role of Buffy Summers.
