Who here is a fan of thrift stores? So let me ask you this: Why do you shop there? Is it because you're after a good bargain? Amen! After all, isn't that what thrift stores are known for, eh?
Well, as it turns out, not all of them are created equal. That's exactly what this one woman experienced after she recently moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. And she's calling out one Value Village thrift store in a TikTok video.
And what she found there was really upsetting to her. She went on a rant on TikTok for a reason. So get this, she went there and found ridiculous prices. And I'm going to show you a few things she's talking about here.
She shows the motto on their website that reads, "Committed to making secondhand second nature," something she very much believes they don't accomplish.
She says that Value Village needs to be "called out" and that they're getting "out of control".
She found a dirty, used garbage can that Value Village was selling for $5. I mean, what? You can buy a brand new one at the dollar store for less than that. Am I right? That doesn't sound like a good bargain to me.
They're selling some sort of Thanksgiving-inspired art for a whopping $25 each. WTF? You can easily get something like this at another store for much cheaper. So what gives Value Village, huh? That's not right.
This place will try to pawn off this broken fan for a total of $9.99. I mean, look at it. It's cracked. So the chances of it even working are pretty slim. Perhaps somebody can get it for parts, but that's still asking for too much.
She says that right before showing off a red, plastic bin for $7 and saying, "And that a lot of these things are from te dollar store.
The trend of overvaluing garbage products is a common one, though,what about reselling a product the same price it would be new?
You must've seen people scoring some great deals at thrift stores, right? I recall some folks getting a stand mixer at a thrift store for next to nothing. But that won't happen here at Value Village. Here they have them at the back of the store, and when you check the price, it's $200.
Of course, with it being a thrift store, she was hoping it'd be cheaper, but instead, she could only find them for sale for $30, a price she can't afford as she just moved. She notes this is even worse for, say, immigrant families who are looking to furnish their homes for cheap.
But recently, their price hikes have become absolutely unacceptable. She says it's become "too much" and that more people ought to call them out for their prices before they continue to get worse.
Well, after this lady posted her video, other people chimed in. They were also appalled by those prices. Many of them called out Value Village for not sticking to their values of being a thrift store. And I tend to agree with them here.
Seriously? I love HomeSense, but those are not the prices I would expect to see at a thrift store. You can actually find something much cheaper at the dollar store or even Walmart. So I don't see the point of going to Value Village anymore.
Value Village gets their stuff for free — it's donated. So why do they turn around and try to rip people off? Some folks found items with original tags that were less than what the Value Village tag said. Can you believe that? OMG!
Are you as fed up with Value Village as these people here? I honestly haven't shopped there in a while, but now that I hear all these stories, it doesn't make me want to go there at all. So by doing this, they will be losing a lot of customers. I get that they want to make a profit, but I think they lost what their original purpose used to be.
