After hearing the 2020 Oscar nominations, a very disappointed Bette Midler took to Twitter, suggesting an “Osc-hers” show to celebrate the women in the industry who were snubbed this year.
Earlier this week, Issa Rae and John Cho announced the 2020 Oscar nominations.
And people can’t help but notice the lack of female representation in the Best Director category.
Martin Scorsese, Todd Phillips, Sam Mendes, Quentin Tarantino, and Bong Joon-ho were the nominees in said category — all men.
Issa Rae immediately threw shade after reading the list of nominees, saying: “Congratulations to those men .”
Issa’s subtle dig set the tone for subsequent reactions on Twitter by other women in the industry as well as fans.
Especially considering how many brilliant, critically acclaimed films directed by women were released this year.
Countless fans chimed in about the bias displayed blatantly in the Oscar nominations.
This person pointed out the lack of diversity in the nominations, generally, as well as the absence of female filmmakers.

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll be waiting yet another year to see female filmmakers get the credit and recognition they deserve.
Although, it is definitely disappointing that in 2020 women are still fighting for equality on such a fundamental level.
One of the many people let down by this year’s nominations, was the legendary, Bette Midler.
Disgruntled by the list of nominees, she tweeted, suggesting there should be an alternative award show for women since, apparently, the Oscars only represent men.
“No women received noms for Best Director Oscar even though many exceptional films were directed by women this year,” she wrote.
“Maybe we just get our own show called the Osc-hers? “
I second this!
“I guarantee it will be way better organized and way more entertaining!,” she concluded.

Unsurprisingly, Bette’s tweet was met with tons of support from fans who agree that women were seriously snubbed this year by the Oscars.
Others suggested that women should boycott this year’s ceremony altogether.
This fan thinks that if the Oscars continue to primarily support men, then there should be a women’s award show, and women should steer clear of the Oscars to make a point.
Withdrawing their support entirely would really make a statement.
Others think that Bette should host the “Osc-hers” herself!
Considering this whole thing was her idea, she definitely needs to be a key player in organizing it!
However, in a perfect world, it would be nice if there weren’t any segregation at all.
The arts should be celebrated without any regard for gender, color, religion, or sexual orientation, amirite?!
