We tend to think of animals in the wild as being engaged in a brutal, heartless battle for survival, where only the fittest live for very long, and where mercy is rewarded with cruelty.
So scenes like this one really throw our expectations for a loop.

It’s not necessarily the strangest thing in the world for two animals from different species to strike up a friendship.

But it’s one thing for animals that see each other regularly in close proximity to be friendly.
It’s a lot more unexpected when it actually occurs in the wild.
But apparently, that’s what happened when a cold, shivering puppy wandered up to this goose.
The goose just welcomed the little pup into its soft, downy embrace to help warm it up.
For some folks out there, it was a surprise to see a goose being so loving.
Their reputation for hissing and biting precedes them and it’s a very real possibility if they decide the area you need to pass through is their territory.
And it’s changing some people’s opinions of the much maligned birds.
As for those who were team goose all along, this moment served as proof that we weren’t giving geese a fair shake.
And one of them was willing to come to the defense of the most notorious geese of all.
“I keep telling people geese aren’t evil,” wrote one person. “I’ve lived near Canadian geese my whole life, and they’ve always been decent to me.”
But mostly, they just loved the interaction.
“That mom knows how to mom,” wrote one person.
“Geese are misunderstood,” wrote another, “they’re the best mothers of all time.”
