Whenever Hollywood casts prominent figures, people are bound to have a lot of opinions about it — it’s the internet, after all! So when I saw The Crown had recently released pictures of their “new” Princess Diana and Prince Charles, I knew people were going to have a lot of thoughts about it, and to be fair, I have a lot of thoughts about it as well.
*The Crown* is one the Netflix’s best shows ever, and trust me, I’ve watched a lot of them over the past year.
Sure, it’s no Virgin River, but it’s still really good television!
What I and many other Crown fans love about the show is the brilliant casting.
The previous fourth season of the series was a huge hit among fans, who were introduced to Princess Diana, played by Emma Corrin.
Season four showed fans the story of when a young Diana Spencer met and married a young Prince Charles, played by Josh O’Connor, and how she dealt with the stress of worldwide fame and her husband’s public affair.
Now, the show has began production for season five, which will take place in the nineties.
Actress Elizabeth Debicki will take over as Princess Diana, while Dominic West will take over as Prince Charles. The duo will be joined in season 5 by Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, and Jonny Lee Millers as John Major.
On Tuesday, fans got a first look at the new Princess Diana and Prince Charles and the people are… confused, to say the least.
“Dominic West is hot. Charles, ahem, well, is not. God rest Diana’s soul,” tweeted one user.
“Dominic West could put on a nose prosthetic, a wig to show thinning hair, have makeup give him rosacea and lose 50 pounds, and he would still be way hotter than Charles ever was,” echoed another .
“I don’t know what Charles did to deserve such generous casting lol,” joked a different user.
It’s clear people felt the casting was very flatting towards Charles.
As for Diana, it seems fans believe Elizabeth Debicki is a good choice, even though the show normally replaces actors after two seasons, meaning season 4 Diana, played by Emma Corrin, should have gotten one more season.
Regardless of how people feel about the casting, we know it’s set to be an amazing and emotional season — *The Crown* always makes sure of that.
