Weird food often gets its time in the spotlight online, especially in fall fair season. But seldom does a recipe you’d make from home get much attention online.
That changed a bit when someone dug up a ridiculous, 2:20 video recipe for a “deep fried BBQ chicken stuffed pizzadilla.” It was one of those vids that inspires as many questions as it does disgusted reactions, and within days it had racked up tens of millions of views.
It would be reasonable to think that this cheesy, deep fried concoction was born in the U.S.A., but no, somehow this comes to us from the U.K.
Of course, some brave soul had to go ahead and try the recipe just to see how insane it all actually was. Folks, none of you are making this at home.
Shay Spence, who happens to be the food editor over at People , decided to take up the challenge and posted the whole process on Twitter, and it all confirmed that this is an absolutely bonkers recipe.
The first hurdle? The ingredients.
Shopping was a significant setback for Shay’s wallet. We’re talking six chicken breasts, 12 strips of bacon, and enough herbs and spices to make Colonel Sanders salivate. “$80 not including emotional labor so y’all owe me,” he wrote.
The second hurdle was the clock. That original 2:20 vid was hugely condensed, but you could tell by all the steps that it would take a while. Nevertheless, Shay went forward with it.
You start out by dousing the chicken with a blend of spices and baking it all up for an hour and shredding it.
And after even this first step, Shay was unimpressed with the results.
That “bland-ass chicken” gets stirred up with onions and BBQ sauce. Then, in a springform pan, you put down a tortilla, a layer of shredded cheese, add the chicken mix, add another layer of cheese, and then top it with another tortilla and let it all chill for an hour.
Think you’re almost done? Not on your life.
You’re nowhere near done. Next up, you slice that chilled creation into six large pieces so that you can bread each of them individually.
It makes me tired just thinking about it, and indeed, Shay was not exactly enamored with the process, either.

Each breaded slice then has to take bath in some nice, hot oil.
Hence the “deep fried” part of the recipe. Good news, Shay’s almost done. Just another three or four steps to go!
Topping those deep fried slices will be marinara, mozzarella, and pepperoni, making it a “pizzadilla.”
There’s also a dill-sour cream dipping sauce to be mixed up, so there’s that.
By the time Shay takes the whole thing out of the oven, he’s put in a good 5-6 hours of work.
Was it worth it?
“I expected to like it in a gross-good kind of way,” he wrote . “But the mixture of the sweet bbq sauce, the pizza sauce, and the dill sour cream…truly one of the most vile things I’ve ever eaten. I’m not taking any further questions.”
So there you go, Shay made it and tasted it so you don’t have to, which kind of makes him a hero.
“In my bravest stunt to date, I made the internet’s most vile recipe,” he added on Instagram . “I’ll never be the same.”
