Biology is complicated and in many ways, unpredictable.
No matter what kind of expectations we may have for how people will turn out when they’re born, the reality is that aspects of ourselves we consider basic enough to take for granted are the result of a complicated series of interconnecting development processes.
And while the ways that these processes vary are often too subtle to detect, they can sometimes present themselves in surprising ways that present challenges for doctors and researchers.
But as one astronomically rare case from California illustrates, these anomalies have the most serious implications for the person actually experiencing them.

After welcoming two healthy boys into her life, 31-year-old Jessica Allen decided to offer her services as a surrogate.
As The Independent outlined , it seemed like a good arrangement for her as the $30,000 she would receive for carrying a child to term would allow her to afford being a stay-at-home mom and help her save for a new house.
Alongside this immediate benefit, Allen saw this move as an opportunity to give a family a chance to bring children of their own into this world.
As she told ABC News, “No woman in the world should have to live their life without experiencing the love and the bond from a mother and a child.”
And so, Allen signed up with a San Diego-based firm called Omega Family Global and was matched with a Chinese couple in 2016.
According to The Independent , she would receive in vitro fertilization treatments and become pregnant in April of that year. But six weeks later, another embryo would appear in Allen’s ultrasound.
In her words, “I was a bit scared, but I heard the Lius were thrilled to be having twins.”
As far as doctors and Omega Family Global were concerned, that was indeed all Allen was having and she would receive an additional $5,000.
And since Allen didn’t get the chance to see either baby after she gave birth to both of them via Cesarean section, she saw no reason to believe she wasn’t having twins.
As ABC News reported, that started to change when she later saw a photo of the pair.
As she put it, “I did notice that one was much lighter than the other. You know, obviously they were not identical twins.”
By January 10 of 2017 — about a month after the babies were born — her suspicions were apparently shared by the intended mother, who admitted the babies looked different and asked if she had any idea why.
But while Allen’s case is a marvel to those hearing about it, it soon turned into a nightmare for her.
That’s because Allen was told by both the couple she helped and Omega Family Global of the possibility that her baby would be put up for adoption to a different family entirely.
As she said, “I was heartbroken knowing I carried a baby I didn’t know was mine and that he was taken from me without my knowledge and was in the arms of other people where he did not belong.”
Although the couple would end up giving the baby up to Omega Family Global, they wanted $22,000 in compensation and the agency wanted an additional $7,000 for expenses.
This would be the start of a lengthy legal battle that would cost Allen $3,000, but would ultimately see her win custody of her new son and reduce the outstanding fees to zero.
To solve the mystery, this woman had the children take a DNA test.
And as the BBC reported she would reveal to Allen in a Skype call that one of them was her biological child conceived with her husband, Wardell Jasper.
According to The Independent , this was despite the fact that the couple had used protection while Allen was pregnant with the couple’s child.
But Allen’s case was even rarer than that might suggest as this happened as a result of an incredibly uncommon phenomenon known as superfetation.
As ABC News outlined, this is a the term given for when a woman is pregnant with two babies who aren’t twins at the same time and according to their chief medical contributor — Dr. Jennifer Ashton — there still isn’t a solid hormonal or physiological explanation for why it happens.
A reproductive medicine specialist named Karen Boyle also said that there were only 10 previously reported cases of superfetation ever occurring.
But while Allen’s case is a marvel to those hearing about it, it soon turned into a nightmare for her.

By February 5, Allen would be reunited with her baby in a Starbucks parking lot and she and Jasper would eventually name him Malachi.
As she told the BBC, “When she [the case worker] pulled him out of her car and walked towards me, I just snatched him from her and said ‘give me my baby’ and I was just kissing him and trying to look at his face for the first time. I sat in the back seat with him so I could see him and talk to him and stuff.”
10 months after this meeting, Allen and Jasper now say Malachi completes their family.
As Allen told ABC News, “He’s just so smart, so intelligent. He’s learning fast. He’s got two big brothers to run after and learn from.”
