I know a lot of women’s go-to female power song is Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls)” anthem, which I can understand. After all, it gets its point across quite nicely, and I couldn’t possibly turn my back on Queen Bey herself.
But personally, if I want to really pump up my own gender identity and feel more powerful as a woman in this world, I prefer to turn to the 1984 Eurythmics hit, “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves.”
Because there’s nothing I love more than sitting back and listening to the same track that plays during a montage in The First Wives Club , while all those ladies are slowly and ruthlessly getting revenge on their scummy ex-husbands.

I know it’s an older jam, but trust me when I say that in the right mindset and environment, it gets you absolutely *hyped up*.
It’s the kind of song that I like to have playing in the background while I’m doing my best undercover detective work.
That is to say, scoping out all social media accounts belonging to the guy my best friend is currently talking to on Tinder.
Okay, maybe that’s not the *exact* message Eurythmics was trying to get across, but I digress.
There is power in being female. We can talk about it in the sillier senses of course, like the ability some of us have to effortlessly track down a stranger on the internet and be able to find out everything there is to know about him so we’re sure our friend isn’t wasting her time on some loser.
Or the way in which we can execute cutthroat arguments like it’s our damn day job.
But there’s also the more serious side to that power, too.
Our strength and abilities can often be undermined or disregarded entirely by people who consider themselves to be above us.
But joke’s on them, because that just makes us work even harder and better so we can prove that they were wrong all along.
We all know it isn’t easy being a woman, even in today’s world.
But as long as we keep pushing against the people who try to stomp us down, and showing them that we can do more and be more than they ever thought possible, we can turn that pain into unbelievable power.
Because sisters are doing it for themselves, and they’re not afraid to run this whole damn world.
