Over the years, the way in which we parent our children has changed drastically. As the years have gone on and innovation has taken over the medical and technology fields, the “old way” of doing things just isn’t safe and healthy for our kids anymore. If you ask your parents how they raised you, I’m sure it’s nothing like how you’re raising your kids today.
Things have changed so much that sometimes, we forget how “free” people lived in the past.
With so many moms worried about what they eat and drink during pregnancy, it’s crazy to imagine that many of our parents smoked throughout their own pregnancies back in the day.
Every generation has their own ways of doing things, I suppose.
While our parents swear that we grew up “just fine,” there are tons of things we don’t do today that they wouldn’t think twice about. Like, eating cold cuts and drinking a glass of wine or two during pregnancy.
If you think things haven’t changed much, just ask Facebook user Micala Gabrielle Henson.
Henson’s own mother was going through some things and they stumbled upon parenting tips from 1968 — which was a pretty long time ago. It’s pretty much when our parents were starting their own families.
Henson shared the photo on Facebook because she couldn’t believe how different the tips were compared to today.
Some of the instructions included that no one can be near the bed or mess up the linens — and, specified not to smoke in the room with the newborn baby, too.
Also, Henson was surprised that the father wasn’t allowed in the room for nursing.
Separating the baby from its father seems a little crazy seeing as many families like to bond in the new moments in the hospital room. Also, it doesn’t seem like they are really trying to work breastfeeding out at all.
Henson said she isn’t “surprised” many gave up on breastfeeding.
The mom told Bored Panda :
“They limited the amount of time baby could nurse, 5 minutes, then 7 minutes, then 10 minutes. That’s crazy. My babe was pretty much always feeding.”
It’s true!
Some of the food limitations seem a bit strange, too.
I can understand nuts, just in case they have an allergy. But, coconut cake and chocolate? Strawberries? Cherries? Onions? Seems like a pretty strange request to me.

All in all, it’s safe to say many things have changed.
While some moms are very strict about what they do and don’t do with their newborns, at least there are less strict time slots when the baby is born.
And, it’s nice the father (or partner) is allowed in the room whenever!
We all know that when our baby comes into the world, we want to bond as a family and make it a special experience. It’s nice that the hospitals aren’t limiting family time any more!
