All across the world, as the coronavirus spreads, people are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety and health of their families. While this includes social distancing and self-isolation at home, it’s a well-known truth that, sometimes, things happen.
When we least expect it, we can find ourselves in the midst of an emergency and on our way to the hospital. For parents, this is part of the job. But during a pandemic, it can be terrifying.

No one can truly prevent accidents that can lead to injuries.
With our kids all at home and some of us trying to work at the same time, it’s impossible to truly prevent accidents from happening. Sometimes, things happen and we have to deal with it accordingly.
Stephanie Hanrahan, a mom who runs the blog *Tinkles Her Pants*, unfortunately had to deal with it firsthand.
Sharing her story on Facebook, the mom wrote that during the pandemic, her daughter ended up breaking her finger. Obviously this is something that required a trip to the hospital.
Having to take your child to the hospital during a global pandemic is definitely scary, but it’s necessary when things happen like this.
She wrote on her Facebook post :
“I’ve been relatively calm regarding corona. We’re young, we’re healthy. We’re taking precautions, we have faith. But as I sit here in the hospital, a place I’ve spent the majority of my career comfortably working in, I feel unnerved.”
She said the empty hospital was definitely something that spooked her.
“It’s eerily empty. Everyone’s in masks or hazmat suits. If you walk down the hallway, people scatter out of your way. I miss faces, and smiles, and full deep breaths,” she wrote .
Additionally, her daughter’s broken finger put a damper on some of her quarantine activities.
“And then there’s the fear I feel as I wipe down every surface my child touches, or think about the fact that she can no longer ride her bike or run through the sprinkler — the things in quarantine that were pulling us through,” she wrote on Facebook .
Soon after posting to her Facebook page, people began mom-shaming her for even bringing her daughter to the hospital.
She told the website Love What Matters that some people were leaving nasty comments on her post.
The comments ranged from, “You’re a horrible mother for taking your child to a hospital during Corona,” to, “I noticed she touched the wall in the video. She’s probably infected now.”
People left comments on the mom’s Facebook post wishing her daughter a speedy recovery.
Many shared stories of their own troubles when their child broke a bone or sprained something and had to be rushed to the hospital. It’s something many parents go through regularly.
Although, not many go through it during a global pandemic.
Bringing your child into the emergency room or doctor’s office regularly can be a huge pain, but doing so when there’s a global health crisis going on can definitely add extra stress.
At the end of the day, most parents on Facebook realized Hanrahan was doing the best for her daughter.
No matter what happens, taking care of your family comes first. Letting the bone heal on its own could have left permanent damages and many people praised the mom for doing what is right.
While it’s normal to fear going to the hospital during a pandemic, it’s also important to make sure your children are cared for.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a mother taking her daughter to the hospital to ensure she has the proper care needed to repair her broken finger.
The mom added it’s perfectly normal to be scared, but it’s normal for her to take her child in for help.
“It’s not a crime to take a child with a broken bone to the hospital. It is not a crime to be scared during so much uncertainty. But let us not forget that equally as contagious as a virus is kindness,” she said .
Sometimes, people get extra stir-crazy during crises.
With the entire world on pause and getting super nervous when around other individuals during this time, it’s important to not let our fears project onto other people.
While we think we’re doing what’s right, we could actually be hurting others in the process.
Giving advice is one thing, but shaming a mother for taking care of her child when she is in pain is something we should all avoid.
Even though the comments were hurtful, Hanrahan realized they were the result of people’s fear.
“I don’t pay much mind to people online, but this insensate need to tear a mother down for repairing her child’s broken bone really made me think about a lesser-known side effect of Corona: Fear,” she said .
Before we write on another mom’s posts, be smart and think first.
