A former mortician has shared the real reason why so many people end up leaving their jobs in the funeral industry soon after taking them.
She spoke about it in a video

Taking to her platform on TikTok, content creator Tilly, opened up about her lived experience working in a mortuary.
She said it was one of the most ‘fulfilling’ experiences of her life, explaining that she liked a lot of aspects of it.
She would prepare bodies to rest
A mortician, who is also known as an undertaker, is someone whose job is to prepare bodies for burial or cremation.
The job also includes embalming, arranging transportation, and handling the paperwork.
It gave Tilly a sense of purpose
In her video, the content creator said the job was quite fulfilling as she felt a great sense of purpose helping families navigate grief and moments of vulnerability.
But there were a lot of things about the job that were challenging.
Many quit soon after taking the job
She revealed that the challenges that come with working in the funeral industry often cause a lot of people to quit.
“The biggest thing is that I had no life whatsoever and whatever mortician, funeral director, morgue worker, whoever you ask, intern, licensed or not, will tell you the same thing,” she said.
It’s too draining of a job

“You will have no life, the funeral home will become your life, because death doesn’t sleep and neither can we, apparently,” she explained.
Tilly said that ‘internships are very hard to come by’, adding that even if you land one, ‘you’re gonna be in for the ride of grunt work for the longest time.’
This often discourages people from the field
The TikToker explained, “All you’re pretty much gonna be able to do is pick ups and run errands, and that’s if you can secure an internship, which is also a big part of why a lot of people are discouraged from entering this field.”
“I got lucky, not everybody gets lucky,” she said.
She had to leave to take care of her baby

The content creator further explained that she didn’t go back into the field because, at the time, she had just had a baby and was in a new relationship, which she was ‘trying to nurture’.
“Working 10 hour days, every single day, sometimes for 14, 15 days, was just not it,” she said.
You have to be dedicated for the job
“My entire life was the funeral home, and again, while I enjoy what I do, and it brings me fulfillment, I am a human being,” the TikToker noted.
She went on to advise people looking to become morticians to think carefully before taking the job.
It’s fulfilling but needs someone who has the time
“Maybe wait until you’re a little older,” she suggested as she explained the job needs someone without other major commitments.
“What I found is that, again, I love this field, and I would love to go back. But it’s better if I go back in the future when I’m not so much needed here.”
