You know that feeling when you see something you really love in a store, but you kind of want to die at how high the price is?
Yeah, same. It’s time to put our wallets away and pull out the measuring tape because we’re saying no to high prices and yes to “I bet I could make that.”
1. A cloud lamp
Cloud lamps are everywhere right now. They’re also crazy expensive, and — as YouTubers Evan and Kaitlyn found out — often not exactly as advertised.
For their DIY redo, they chose a cloud light on Amazon that retailed for $100.
The DIY is way better.
The original Amazon cloud had optional interactive lights and a speaker that pushed its price over $3000. With some craft supplies, LED lights, and a Google mini speaker, they made their own for $81.50.
2. Urban Outfitters can’t beat the price of this headboard.
YouTuber Tasha Leelyn loved a light-up headboard from Urban Outfitters, but also suffered from that classic DIY-er struggle: “Should I buy it, or DIY it?”
Luckily for all of us, she chose to DIY it.
This is a DIY anyone can do.
She used a wooden broom handle, electrical wire, twinkle lights, and spray paint to make her own headboard.
Her project came in at $70. You could even do it cheaper if you used some hoola hoops — but that’s just my suggestion.
3. This trellis mirror is begging to be diy-ed.
Who wants to spend $300 on a mirror? Pottery Barn assumes you do, apparently.
YouTuber The Latina Next Door decided that $300 was way too high a price to pay for something she could easily DIY herself.
The result is identical.
She transformed a $5.95 thrift store mirror into an exact replica of the Pottery Barn mirror. Done with wooden dowels and some paint, this mirror is frankly superior to the Pottery Barn one in every single way.
4. This West Elm planter
Over at The Sorry Girls on YouTube , Kelsey and Becky decided to take on this planter from West Elm.
The size they went for normally retails for $50-$70. Let’s see what they came up with, shall we?
This is unclockable.
You’d never be able to tell this was handmade. Becky utilized some wood from the hardware store, a thrifted pot, reddish-brown stain, and some white spray paint to create a perfect West Elm knockoff.
The best part? It only cost $26.50.
5. This macrame pendant light was pretty adorable.
But it’s about $600. Thanks, Anthro! Since Morgynn killed it with the planters, let’s see what she can do with this frankly overpriced pendant light, shall we?
Spoiler alert: if you’re going to try this DIY out, you will have to learn macrame.
This one is way cuter.
Hers is so perfect! Instead of going for something tiered, she stuck with one fringed hoop. The best part? It’s cheap as hell. All it costs is the price of a pendant light and macrame material. You got this!
6. This bench is made with love.
West Elm wanted $700 for a white bench with black legs. Home Made by Carmona decided that was way too much, so Ursula Carmona teamed up with 4 bloggers to create their own version of the bench.
The result is an amazing piece of furniture.
Who needs that pricey West Elm piece when this one looks absolutely identical?
Made using wood, paint, and the usual tools, this amazing DIY cost a mere $15. Can you believe that?!
7. West Elm, meet your match.
West Elm’s Emmerson table is highly sought after by home decor and furniture lovers everywhere. The thing that’s not sought after? The price.
Clocking in at a whopping $1000+, this reclaimed wood table is begging for a DIY.
This is a perfect replica.
With a gorgeous darker stain, this knockoff by Reddit user kh_woodworking was achieved much the same way the West Elm one was: reclaimed wood, stain, and a lot of patience.
8. Cane furniture is in your grasp.
Okay, so this Crate & Barrel woven cane wardrobe is absolutely stunning. But the price… Well, that’s not so stunning.
Drew at Lone Fox Home decided to DIY his own version for under $200.
This is a genuinely nicer looking wardrobe (no shade, Crate & Barrel).
I mean, look at how perfect that looks! Drew purchased some bulk cane and actually straight-up glued it to the glass doors of an IKEA Billy bookshelf. You’d never know that was a Billy, would you?
9. I don’t know WHO Anthropologie was kidding with these planters.
As gorgeous as they are, would you buy both of them for $150? Yeah, me either. YouTuber Morgynn H liked the look of them, but hated the price, too. So she made her own.
These look so much better.
Morgynn’s slightly thinner wooden dowels made her planter stands look more mid-century. She made all three planters for less than $10.
Some things are a waste of time to DIY. This is not one of them. Do not pay $150 for a basket, y’all!
10. Pottery Barn who?
A clever Reddit user decided to put their skills to use and make a Pottery Barn Kids loft bed from scratch. “I built an almost-exact replica of a $2,000 Pottery Barn Kids loft bed for about $570,” they said.
The original bed retailed for $2000. Check it out here .
The DIY version is amazing.
With a lot of wood, glue, nails, and paint, the Pottery Barn version got left in the dust.
The user even added a handy door for extra storage. All in all, the total came to $570. Not too bad for a whole bed.
