A husband and wife team have made history in their Alabama hometown after opening its very first pediatric urgent care clinic, WHNT reported.
Rodney and LaKeva Harris opened Kids First Pediatric Urgent Care this past May, and not only is it the first of its kind for the town, but it’s also the only clinic exclusively for children in a 60-mile radius.
LaKeva, a pediatric nurse, explained the clinic offers parents another option for where to take their sick or injured children.
“This gives parents the opportunity to bring their kids here instead of taking them to the ER for urgent illnesses,” she told WHNT , adding that their facility also helps to offer more patient availability at other area urgent care clinics.
Patients seen at the clinic range in age from 2 months to 18 years.

Both LaKeva and her husband, Coach Rodney, have experience interacting and dealing with young children.
They understand how terrifying a trip to the doctor’s office can be, and said that is what inspired them to open a facility that would feel much more comforting to young patients.
“Coming to our clinic will minimize your child’s trauma associated with waiting in the emergency room where they are exposed to a variety of situations and illnesses,” the facility’s website explains. “We have a child-friendly environment for you and your family.”
The clinic is also designed to be convenient for parents.
“We are an after-hours pediatric walk-in clinic and we cater to working families because a lot of times children get sick after 5 p.m. or once the pediatric offices close,” LaKeva said.
The Kids First clinic is open Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
For LaKeva in particular, Florence’s first pediatric urgent care clinic has been a dream she’s long waited to see realized.
“She always told me that she wanted to start a clinic and it was a perfect opportunity to go,” Rodney told WHNT . “So we did.”
