Friendly Reminder That Women Need Self-Care Time Beyond Tending To Their Basic Needs

Merriam Webster defines "self-care" as the act of taking "care for oneself."

This definition gives room to many ideas (i.e. taking a bubble bath or practicing yoga). Some, however, are doing it all wrong.

It's become common for people — women, especially — to declare taking care of basic human needs, such as going to the washroom, as #selfcare.

Here's why this is troubling.

No one can pour from an empty cup — especially women.

As wives, mothers, and business owners, they get used to juggling so much on their plate.

This leads some women to view basic needs like using the bathroom alone as their "self-care time."

Soon enough, that hour-long trip to Target to grab toilet paper and dish soap is also labeled as "self-care."

In other words, a lot of women have the definition of self-care confused.

It's not taking a sick day when you're actually sick or shopping for the household.

It's actually taking time for yourself to recharge your batteries — and women need more of it.

Just like you carve out time to take your kids to the park, schedule a workout for yourself or a coffee date with a friend.

Share your plate with those who are willing!

Have your husband take care of the kids for the night so you can actually have alone time in the bathroom to soak in the tub.

All of this goes for women without kids, as well. You deserve actual self-care time, so go and grab it!
