Teen Mom OG couple Cory Wharton and Taylor Selfridge are weathering a stormy period in their life and it has to do with their young child. In his latest social media update, Cory took to Instagram asking for fans’ support as he and Selfridge’s 7-month-old child, Maya, underwent major surgery.
Wharton Is Asking Fans To Get Their Prayers Up
The TV personality had a quite heart-melting moment as he shared a father-daughter selfie with little Maya. In the snapshot, Cory had his face covered in a surgical nose mask while sporting a visitor’s tag in the hospital’s operating room. He had Maya in one hand showing her adorable heart-shaped face peering into the camera. The star dad penned a lengthy caption as he and Selfridge prepared for their daughter to undergo open heart surgery. He wrote:

Wharton Gave More Update
Still updating fans about his toddler daughter’s state of health, he noted that the family had been anticipating the day of surgery “for so long.” He mentioned all the anxiety that had built up for months. The doting dad relayed that he could not wait for her heart to be fixed, so they could move “from this chapter.” He thanked fans for the support while noting that he would share more updates with time. With over 5000 comments, fans expressed their love for Wharton’s family while wishing his daughter well as she underwent the major surgery.
Wharton Describes ‘An Unreal Feeling’
The MTV alum would later take to his Instagram stories sharing another update as he poured out his heart. he described an unreal feeling as he wanted his daughter to be ok in the long run. He noted the dilemma of wanting her to be fine, but not wanting her to be in pain as well. He stated, “Anybody that knows as a parent seeing your kid in pain and not being able to help is the worst feeling in the world.”
What To Know About Open Heart Surgery
When Selfridge was 22 weeks pregnant, she discovered her baby had tricuspid atresia. According to the Mayo Clinic , this is a congenital heart defect where the valve is not properly formed between the two right heart chambers. The implication of this is that there is limited blood flow through the heart chambers. The condition can be corrected with multiple surgeries, and statistics on how the majority of kids who undergo such procedures, survive to adulthood.
Post Surgery Update
Hours after his first post, Cory took to Instagram once again letting fans in on the state of things after Maya’s surgery. The father of three made it known that while Maya was doing okay, she was “not doing great.” He relayed that the doctors kept her sedated because her left lung had some fluid in it. he noted that this meant she had some difficulty breathing on her own. The personal trainer shared that all they needed was for the baby girl to push out all the fluid in her lungs, and with that, they would be hopeful that her vitals would return to normal.
Maya Is On A Ventilator
Cory further shared that his daughter was on a ventilator, a part of the process. He assured fans that she was in good hands, and all they needed was for fas to keep putting her in their prayer. The Challenge star described his beloved daughter as a “fighter” who would make it through. He later mentioned that he and presumably Maya’s mom had a meeting with the doctors and nursing teams, and there was hope that she would pull through.
Cory and Selfridge’s Family
Maya is the youngest of Selfridge and Cory’s children. Their first child is Mila Mae who they welcomed two years ago. Cory has a five-year-old daughter, Ryder, with his ex, Cheyenne. Back when Maya’s heart condition was revealed to he parents, Selfridge took to social media to express how their “lives turned upside down in a matter of seconds.” She shared that the little girl was born better than expected, and a stent was put in place ahead of her first open heart surgery.
Maya Has Had Her First Procedure
While the current surgery is being done at 7 months, May had her first open heart operation when she was six days old. At the time her mom revealed how everything was quite a rollercoaster and the most channeling period for the family. Selfridge noted that she sought out mothers whose kids had the same commotion to share her pain with.
