When we see stray animals wandering the streets, it’s hard not to wonder how they got there.
That’s especially true if they had evidence of being in somebody’s care before, but it’s worth noting that some owners will have to leave their pets behind after a crisis suddenly erupts or if they have to move after that pet goes missing.

But at the same time, it would be overly optimistic to assume that’s how it always goes down. Because while this behavior be may unfathomable to us, we can see that some people have so little regard for the lives of vulnerable animals that they’ll abandon them in conditions they know aren’t survivable.
And as we’ll see from one bittersweet story, nobody knows that sad reality better than garbage collectors.
On February 22, a garbage collector in France uploaded a video to TikTok that depicted him and his colleagues making a disturbing discovery.
Translated from French, the caption of their video states , “Another sad rescue, I am disgusted.”
And from the very beginning, it’s clear what the problem is because some mewling can be heard from the back of the truck.
In a likelihood, it was only because of that mewling that this man could tell there was a kitten in the bag he was holding.
While his coworkers express shock and dismay at the fact that someone could throw a kitten out with their trash, one of them hands him a knife to cut the bag open.
As we can see, that turns out to be challenging even with the knife due to how tightly wrapped the bag is.
There’s also the fact that getting into it without harming any of the kittens inside makes for quite a delicate operation.
Nonetheless, he’s able to cut through within 20 seconds, at which point one of the collectors says, “Oh it’s not just one!”
Indeed, they soon open the bag and reveal that whoever was responsible for this was trying to get rid of a whole litter as at least five kittens can be seen huddling inside.
Sadly, the collectors noted that too much time had passed for one of them, but they were nonetheless able to rescue the remaining kittens.
In the first of a series of follow-up videos, the kittens could be seen huddling inside a wool hat nestled in a cardboard box.
One of the collectors also showed that the cats were being well-cared for after being brought inside his home, saying they “are all very well, they only ask to live.”
One of these videos available here featured a kitten with light fur being bottle-fed while the collector’s curious dog looks on.
As a representative from the Royal Society for the Protection of animals told Ladbible, “Thankfully, because of the kindness and quick-thinking of the refuse collectors, these kittens were saved in time. Many animals are sadly not so lucky.”
