30 Great Pics With Equally Great Backstories

There's something about knowing the story behind a picture that just makes it so much better. Maybe there's a powerful message behind it, or maybe it shows you something you wouldn't expect. Or, it could just be a cool picture with a cool story.

All of these awesome pics have some kind of backstory that just makes them even more awesome.

"I have Synesthesia, and started making art full time to handle life. I'm so incredibly happy!"

The way your mind perceives things when you have synesthesia is pretty amazing, so using that to create paintings must be a really cool way to channel your creativity. I hope this guy keeps up the good work!

"Candy Anatomy - British Junior Doctor creates anatomy revision diagrams out of candy."

I feel like, for some people, checking out a model of a human hand made out of candy would help them remember different bones and joints. I know for me, my attention span suddenly gets a lot better when there's candy involved.

"These are 2,247 live Indian Star Tortoises. Being parceled to Thailand. Were seized by Customs."

I feel really bad for the people who had to sit there and count all of those tortoises. And then sort them by weight. I guess it goes to show you that being a customs officer is some serious business.

"160 years of foot traffic over the step into my local pub."

A picture like this feels like it has so much history. The way the one side of the step has worn down shows you the path that thousands of people have taken over the span of more than one and a half centuries. That's just cool!

"My 8 piece garlic bread box came with 9 pieces!"

Sometimes, it's the little things that really make your day. Finding an extra piece of garlic bread in a box is up there with finding an extra chicken McNugget in you McDonald's order. It may not seem like much, and yet it could mean the whole world.

"My 13yo cat still excited about a meal."

No matter how old our pets get, they're still our babies. It helps that, in a lot of ways, older animals still act like puppies or kittens.

Seeing your cat get this excited over a meal must be really fun. Just look at those eyes!

"We mentioned it was our anniversary while ordering dinner. When we got home we found this!"

Now this is excellent service. The restaurant didn't have to do this, but they went out of their way to give this couple an anniversary dinner to remember. What a nice reminder that there's still good in this world.

"Wife of 30 years moved out today. Symbolic image of the event."

Not every backstory is a good one. The end of a long-term relationship can be difficult, like breaking a vase and having to pick up all the pieces. I feel like there's a metaphor in here somewhere, but I don't quite know what it is.

"Translator and his child evacuated out of Kabul today."

There are some scary things going on in the world right now. But at the very least, many people from Kabul are able to escape the violence that threatens them. Here's hoping this translator's child can have a bright future.

"Inherited a painting a few years ago, randomly came across the building in the painting while on a trip."

That must be an amazing feeling, finding the place that a painting you own was modeled after. And the best part is that it's a really nice painting of a really cool, old building.

"My brother bought me an outfit, 10 mins later, he walked into the room like this. He likes twinning."

Buying an outfit for your sibling seems like a nice gesture, but there were clearly some ulterior motives in play here. But at least these brothers have something they can laugh on when they get a bit older.

"This man on a bus listening to the recordings of a deceased relative."

The death of a loved one never gets easier. Even years or decades after they pass, you might hear a recording of their voice and break down crying. It's hard to tell when this man lost his relative, but it's still heartbreaking to see.

"Alex Trebek Mural in his memory painted in Sudbury, ON, where he was born and raised."

Even though the late, great Alex Trebek was best known for being the host of Jeopardy!, one of America's greatest gameshows, he was actually from north of the border. But of course, you probably already knew that.

"The painting & the scenery."

There are so many paintings out there of random landscapes. Most of those paintings will never be matched up to the remote places they're based on, but every once in a while, you actually get to see it.

Good thing we got to see this one before the artist took it away.

"These stealth bombers fly over my property daily, finally got a decent picture of one."

That's definitely a pretty cool stealth bomber and totally not a UFO. Though we may not know why these vehicles fly over this person's property every day, we can at least marvel at this awesome picture they got to take.

"My wife and I had never been to a beach, so we decided to pack up and go."

Sometimes, the best reason to go out and do something is because you simply want to. Pack up and go to that beach with your spouse if you want to! Take an amazing vacation. Just have some fun whenever you can.

"Cleaning up the beach at sunrise in Michigan."

Beaches, rivers, parks, forests, and all other natural areas need to be cleaned up. And what better time to do it than during sunrise? For one thing, there are no people around. And you get to take in an amazing view all on your own.

"On Cyprus rental cars have red plates to warn others that people with no experience in left lane are on the road."

Driving on the left is actually really hard. Like, extremely hard unless you're used to it. It makes me wonder how many dangerous situations people got into before Cyprus decided to mark these rental car plates.

"Today was my last day of Veterinary School! I'm now a fully licensed vet! Never give up!"

Even though vets and human doctors learn a lot of different things, they're all still doctors. This is an incredible achievement that anyone should be immensely proud of. Great to see another person out there dedicated to saving pet lives!

"5 years of long distance courtship, 1 year of long distance marriage. Finally we're living together."

Long distant relationships can be really difficult, especially right now, with a lot of borders still closed. This reunion was years in the making, and it was definitely worth every second away. Hopefully, this couple can enjoy their new life together.

"For our wedding my sister gave us a date night wallet filled with gift cards for local dates!"

I can't think of a more thoughtful gift. This is something that the couple can use as they please, going on different dates to different restaurants and venues in their area. What a great gift to give to a newlywed couple!

"This is an oil painting I made of my wife. It’s hard to see it’s a painting until you zoom in."

Sometimes, painting a picture of your wife is the exact thing you need to do. But wow, this painting is so realistic, you almost can't tell it's a painting! I can't even imagine how long it must've taken to create this.

"I paid attention to my lawn for the first time this season. I’m pretty proud of it."

For some, a green lawn may seem like a pretty normal thing. But for those of us who are new homeowners, or who haven't really paid attention to the yard before, this can be a really great sight. Knowing you've maintained a lawn that your neighbors can be jealous of is a nice feeling.

"Sending this drawing off to its first exhibition. Couldn't be more excited."

Having your art hang up in an exhibit for the first time must be an amazing feeling. The amount of hard work it takes to get this far is always worth it, especially when you get to show your work to the world.

"Ringing the bell after a 51-day hospital stay recovering from my so far successful bone marrow transplant."

I can't even begin to imagine what an amazing feeling that must be. After such a long hospital stay, being able to ring that bell and signify the start of your recovery has got to be such a relief.

"Got brain surgery. I made it through."

Brain surgery is such a scary thing. But if you can come out of it still smiling, then you know you're better off than you were before. Hats off to this person for undergoing such a scary procedure, but still managing to keep smiling.

"My 6th grade art teacher gave me an F on my first abstract work. I waited 22 years to try again."

It's nice to know that I'm not the only person who got a really low grade during a middle school art class. But at least this person used that moment and turned it into a triumph.

I won't pretend I understand the work, but I still think it's really nice.

"Photographed my first NFL game yesterday."

Some career trajectories seem so surreal. Imagine going from photographer to NFL photographer. Like, I couldn't even fathom doing something so awesome. It just goes to show you that literally anything is possible as long as you work hard and chase your dreams and goals.

"My wife and I spent our 10 year anniversary in Mexico. We waited 10 years for a vacation this nice."

Sometimes, having a bit of patience can pay off in a big way. This couple waited a decade to have a beautiful tropical vacation, and it was definitely worth it. Hopefully, they won't wait another 10 years before they go on the next one.

"Jane, 92 started new art lessons from my wife 2 months ago, this is her first oil painting!"

It truly is never too late to learn a new hobby. If you want to try something out, just do it. Don't worry about what other people may think, or if you're "too old" (because you aren't).

What a beautiful painting!
