They are devout independent Baptists.
He isn't your average protective father.
If he doesn't approve of the relationship, then there's no chance it's happening.
The mom, Michelle, said: "you always need to be available when he calls," regarding the role of a wife in the Duggar family.
The Duggars are very adamant that sex shouldn't be had before marriage. They take this rule especially extreme, forbidding their children from socializing with anybody that they can prove has had sex out of wedlock.
None of the 19 children, no matter their age, are allowed to go on a date without supervision. If neither of the parents can chaperone the date, the responsibility falls on one of their siblings.
This is Jim Bob and Michelle's way of protecting their children from any outside temptations that the internet may offer.
Shorts and pants are forbidden, and the dresses and skirts must, of course, be relatively modest.
In a recent Instagram post she shared, fans noticed that she had superimposed a skirt onto a women's bare legs in the background of the photo.
"Spent $5 on a game I never had a chance of winning, but memories are priceless! #smalltowngirl"
Jana has since deleted most of the negative comments under her photo to save face.
"It catches your eye as soon as you look at the picture," another person wrote.
"But what is not acceptable is imposing her own personal standards on other people without their consent... by editing their appearance in such a way."
"The Duggars expect to have their beliefs and standards respected, to not extend the same basic courtesy to other people is hypocritical to say the least."
"Don’t think people are blind enough to fall for your joke of a photoshop. At least just crop them out of your picture instead of indirectly shaming and disrespecting them."
Should she have done anything differently?
Do you think it was necessary?
This Twitter user also referenced the strict rules in place for the Duggars, since Jana is not engaged but still uses social media.
There appears to be a young man in the background lifting his shirt up and flipping off the camera, which is probably to most people a bit more immoral than women wearing shorts.
Jill Duggar and her husband Derick have recently garnered a lot of attention for their frequent posts about their sex lives, with some people thinking they're going into way too much detail.
After receiving backlash for posting this, Jill edited the caption on her post to read, "We are not recommending the Kama Sutra," adding that "The little book pictured is a modern, smaller, cleaner, edited version that doesn’t focus on spiritual aspects, homosexual, or other extramarital relationships, and again, we don’t take everything in there either as the truth."
When fans were curious about their views on birth control, it seemed that Derick had suggested that he and his wife do use it, which would likely go against the fundamental beliefs held by the larger family.
Jinger Duggar (now Vuolo) has broken the mold far enough to even wear pants on a semi-regular basis! It looks like some of the adult Duggar children are loosening up a little bit when it comes to the rules imposed by their families.
Jana herself has not responded to any of the comments or drama surrounding her Instagram post, but I bet in the next crowd shot she posts, we won't be seeing any suspicious lengthy skirts in the background.
