There are a few reasons why someone might reject a marriage proposal.
Maybe they fell out of love with the person popping the question; maybe they felt their relationship wasn’t quite at the “marriage” point yet; or maybe they were proposed to by someone who had absolutely no business asking them for their hand in marriage.
But perhaps one of the most unreasonable excuses I’ve ever come across for a proposal rejection has to do with the ring. Or should I say, the “wrong” ring.
A woman recently shared the story of her failed proposal online, and it’s definitely sparked some serious outrage.
Posted to the subreddit r/AmITheAsshole, the unidentified woman wrote that she recently took her girlfriend, code named “Mia,” to her grandpa’s lake house for a romantic weekend away.
One night, while the pair sat watching the sunset together, the woman decided it was the perfect time to pop the question.
Mia said yes, the engagement ring was placed on her finger, and everything seemed like it had perfectly fallen into place.

The happy couple even spent the evening celebrating with the woman’s family, toasting to their future together and a lifetime of wedded bliss.
Unfortunately, that happiness didn’t last very long.
While the pair were packing up to leave the lake house, Mia took her fiancée aside for a frank discussion about their engagement.
“She proceeded to apologize profusely and tell me she hated the ring I got for her,” the woman recalled in the post .
While that made for an understandably awkward situation, it didn’t seem insurmountable at first.
“I’ll admit, I was a bit hurt since I’ve spent months looking for the perfect ring for her, but […] I told her that’s okay and that [we] could go shopping in a few weeks/months to find a ring she likes,” she said.
Seemingly just a small bump in the road, the woman believed she and Mia would sort out the ring issue and be perfectly fine from there on out.
Except that’s not what happened.
Upon being told they would go buy a new ring together, Mia said no, that just wouldn’t work for her. She didn’t want a new ring — she wanted her fiancée’s ring.
As the woman explained, she’s been wearing an antique ring on her finger, one she was given to by her late grandparents, since she was 16 years old.
“Mia has always told [me] she loved this ring and has [said] she thinks that it’s the most gorgeous thing she’s ever seen ever since I started wearing it,” she continued. “I just didn’t know she actually WANTED it.”
After clarifying that she was, indeed, very serious, Mia told her she was being “selfish” by not proposing with that ring and insisted she be given the antique one instead.
The woman refused to part with her meaningful jewelry, and a fight ensued.
“I told her I am in no way giving this to her,” she said. “It’s my great grandma’s ring and it’s to [ sic ] valuable to me. I told her I’m sorry if I’m being selfish, and sorry if I made her believe I was going to give it to her but this ring is MINE.”
After being repeatedly told she won’t be getting the antique ring, Mia decided she had no choice but to call off the engagement.
Now she’s refusing to go get a new ring, and is apparently barely speaking to the woman who was left completely and utterly devastated by her proposal-gone-wrong.
Although she was firm on not wanting to part with her ring, the woman still had doubts about her role in the situation.
“I honestly do feel kind of selfish,” she admitted online . “I want my girl to have the perfect ring, I really do but I really don’t want to give my ring up. I don’t think I’d be able to.”
So she posed this question to the people of Reddit: is she being an asshole in this situation?
The answer was a resounding “no.”
“You wearing a ring that has sentimental value to you isn’t leading her on,” this user wrote. “If you don’t want to give it, you shouldn’t feel an obligation to give it.”
And in the consensus view, it wasn’t just that the woman wasn’t being selfish, but that Mia was.
Another person added, “Please don’t feel selfish because your girlfriend is trying to guilt you into giving up a sentimental family heirloom. This is seriously entitled and red flag behaviour on her part!”
Indeed, other people echoed this sentiment and expressed outrage at Mia’s behavior.
This person perhaps said it best when they commented:
“[Saying] that she doesn’t want any engagement ring if it’s not that one is manipulative and guilt-trippy AF. She’s a child throwing a tantrum. If she doesn’t want the one you gave her then she can just give it back, there problem solved. Don’t let yourself budge on something that means so much to you.”
