A Redditor decided to ditch her friend’s wedding after the bride did something unforgivable: she set her up with someone who’s “more in her league.” In other words, the “friend” didn’t believe she was good enough for her current boyfriend.

This torn bridesmaid brought her dilemma to Reddit’s “Am I The Asshole?” community.
She began by sharing that she and her friend, Mary, have known each other since they were children. As many childhood friends often do, they’ve grown apart over the past few years.
Despite this, Mary still considers the Redditor a friend; one important enough to be a bridesmaid.
The wedding is in three weeks. The Redditor also shared that the reason she and Mary drifted apart over the years is because of how Mary treats her relationship.
She explained that she and her boyfriend, Jack, have been together for three and a half years.
“He’s a wonderful person, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is the man I want to marry,” she wrote. Unfortunately, Mary isn’t supportive of this.
This “friend” even went so far as to say that Jack is “too good” for her.
Here’s a little background on Jack: he comes from wealthy parents and has lived a very privileged life. This is a huge contrast to the Redditor’s childhood.
“I grew up in a low income neighbourhood, often wondering where my next meal was, or how I was gonna help pay the bills at a young age.”
She also pointed out that Jack is “conventionally attractive. By that, she said that he could be a model.
Because of all this, Mary believes that Jack deserves better than the Redditor.
According to her, “There’s no way I could have pulled someone so attractive and rich.”
“It’s pretty disheartening to hear those things constantly and it does kind of take a toll on you (and the friendship),” the Redditor wrote.
“Whenever Jack is around, she’s quite polite and respectful, never once making those comments. Eventually, the comments stopped.” Sadly, that wasn’t the end of it.
Mary invited her for lunch with her fiancé and his friend, Gary.
When Gary asked why she was single, he was taken aback when she told him that she was in a happy, committed relationship. “He told me that Mary had set up a blind, double-date of sorts for the both of us.”
Naturally, the Redditor was angry and confused.
When she called Mary later to ask why she had done that, Mary tried to deny it first. Finally, she said that “Gary is a man who’s more in my league.”
This led the Redditor to say she didn’t want to be a bridesmaid anymore.
Mary was upset. She tried to apologize and say it was a mistake.
“It’s been a few days and her fiancé has been texting me, asking me to suck it up for the wedding. I feel petty and conflicted right now,” the Redditor wrote.
Reddit wasted no time in clearing up any confusion on what to do.
“You are so absolutely NTA and you should have dumped this ‘friend’ the minute she told you Jack was too good for you,” one Redditor wrote. “
“Don’t let her change your mind,” they added.
Another agreed, adding, “she sounds kind of jealous.” This conniving behavior hurt the friend and Gary as well.
One even suggested that Mary is in love with Jack.
More than anything, though, the Redditor was urged to drop that friend.
“NTA Mary sounds like a ‘frenemy’ and the sooner you cut contact the better off you’ll be in the long run,” a user commented. “Sorry OP, it hurts to realize a friendship has run its course.”
