The internet loves a good optical illusion or visual trick, preferably one that breaks everybody’s minds. Who doesn’t love finding out if they’re seeing something nobody else is?
So if you’re up for it, we’d like to present the latest to you: a drawing that could be a fish, could be a mermaid, and could be neither.
It’s been awhile since we’ve seen one of these.

I don’t know if this one’s poised to break as many brains as the white and gold dress from a few years back (if you think it’s black and blue, you’re just plain wrong), but it’s still a pretty good visual trick.
Here it is.
This tweet from Ana Navarro-Cárdenas shows a line drawing. Apparently if you’re right-brained, you’ll see a fish and if you’re left-brained you’ll see a mermaid, or so the image suggests.
I see a donkey or something, so I’m beginning to wonder if I have a brain at all.
Not everyone saw a mermaid or a fish.
This person is thinking along my lines, as I can kind of see a kangaroo here. I still see a donkey for the most part, but a kangaroo is far more plausible to my brain than a fish or a mermaid.
Could it be both?
Sometimes rotating an image can give it a fresh look, but in this case, I don’t really see it. That said, I’m not sure what a ‘seal mermaid’ would look like anyway.
Some people just wanted to ruin a good time.
Ken comes off a tad grumpy here, but he’s not exactly wrong. By keeping things vague and suggesting two possibilities before giving the reader a chance to see the image, it makes things more intriguing.
Laying it on a bit thick.
You actually have to scroll down some ways before anyone chimes in with anything but skepticism. It seems that quite a few people saw a horse, but I suspect this person is either Ana’s biggest fan, or Ana herself.
That’s highly specific, but sure.
There are no wrong answers here, so sure, maybe it’s Tusky the Walrus from the Aquaman cartoons this guy watched as a kid. I don’t know who Tusky the Walrus is or what they looked like, but it’s certainly possible.
Here’s the source.
This is why I love the internet: someone always comes through and eventually brings the receipts. It’s a vague image used in studies of visual perception , and was originally designed to show either a horse or a seal, not a fish or a mermaid.
What do you see?

If your visual perception isn’t totally shot by now, check out the image for yourself, free of the visual clutter of Twitter comments. Do you see a horse? A mermaid? A seal? A fish? Tusky the Walrus?
Whatever you see, even if it’s a bunch of lines, make sure to share your thoughts in the comments!
