If we were all judged by our old tweets and emails — well, actually, I guess we often are. We have to be careful with our words online because they can really come back to haunt us in the future.
And if you’re the kind of person who cameras point at very often, you’ll be aware that you’re under scrutiny. That’s part and parcel with being a public figure. What you say in front of those cameras can pack a nasty surprise down the line, too.
With the nation singularly focused on whether or not there should be a giant wall along the southern border, Trevor Noah found some damning footage of President Trump’s previous anti-wall leanings.
It’s like the “there’s always a tweet for that” game on Twitter, where you can often dig up an old Trump tweet that contradicts a current Trump soundbite/policy/talking point. There isn’t always a tweet, but it’s pretty shocking how often there is one that works.
The footage shows Trump giving a commencement address at Staten Island’s Wagner College back in 2004.
Mr. Trump, who has made his entire political career around little more than a desire to build The Wall, can be heard giving advice to students on what they should do if the encounter a wall to overcome it.
Of course, he meant it as a metaphor at the time, but it just works so well now.
Trevor and The Daily Show deserve a pretty nice high five for finding that clip and giving it to the world. The tweet they used to share it was epic too, saying “Oh man, once Trump gets his wall he better hope no one shows Mexico this old video we found.”
On the show, Trevor talked about how Trump’s single-minded insistence on a wall had reduced the illegal immigration issue to simply “wall or no wall.”

“If there’s one thing we know, it’s that nothing will stop immigrants from trying to come to America. This is the place that people dream of coming to because people who are trying to make a better, safer life for their families will do anything to achieve that dream,” he said, according to USA Today.
For something that has been so simplified, it is indeed an impassioned debate, with high stakes.
There’s a full, 13+ minute video of Trump’s Wagner College address on YouTube , by the way. In it, he also suggests students get pre-nuptial agreements, and I guess he would know.
In the meantime, Trevor’s fans have been lapping — and laughing — it up at the old footage.
How can you not? Frankly, this whole situation needs some lightening up before we get back to unfriending our family members on Facebook when they disagree with us.
And as long as the shutdown drags on, you can either laugh or cry or yell about it, right?
So why not have a chuckle before moving on to the next debate? You’ve got to have some laughs in life!
