Though the largest title change that has occurred after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing was undoubtedly Prince Charles becoming King Charles III , one that has a particular public significance is Kate Middleton , Duchess of Cambridge, becoming the Princess of Wales.
Seeing how heavily that title is connected to the late Princess Diana , a.k.a. The People’s Princess, it has some people debating whether Kate should have it at all.

It’s an emotional moment for those who loved Princess Diana.
Some may wonder if Kate has proven herself worthy of the title such a beloved Princess had before her.
However, one Royal historian believes she’s the perfect candidate for the job.
Elizabeth Norton is an expert on Royal Family history.
She’s even written a book about England’s lineage of queens titled England’s Queens: The Biography .
She spoke to inews about the transition lately and her thoughts on it, saying, “This title change is really significant and Kate is the right person to be the next Princess of Wales.”
She believes it’s time for the title to move forward.
“The title is very much associated with Diana, and it always will be, but the time has come to acknowledge that it’s a title that continues. It doesn’t detract from Diana’s legacy if there’s a new holder, and I would think she would want her daughter-in-law to hold the title,” she said.
Of course, the new King agrees.
In his first speech, King Charles III said of William, “Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, […] With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations […].”
Norton and many others agree that this particular title change is extremely significant.
“You would think there would have been lots of Princesses of Wales,” she said, “But actually it’s much rarer for there to be a Princess of Wales than a Prince of Wales, and there haven’t been that many holders, just one or two a century. It is a title very much synonymous with Diana, and that makes this inheriting of the title particularly important.”
