Nature runs deeply even in the cutest, cuddliest domesticated animals. Instincts are the voices our furry companions can’t tune out and won’t be denied.
We got a pretty epic reminder of that from a housecat recently when it was left for an overnight stay at a pet hotel that got a little bit frisky.

At least six cat owners in China were left flabbergasted over a single night at a pet hotel.
Mr. and Mrs. Zhao of Guangdong left their Russian Blue named Xiaopi for one evening, and it was anything but a restful night for the tomcat.
He found a way to exert himself so much that it was actually hazardous to his health.
The next morning, he was so exhausted and worn out he had to be put on a glucose drip, The Mirror reported.
Mr. Zhao said that he got to review the night’s CCTV footage to see what happened, and it turned out Xiaopi took advantage of his night out.
“I thought they’d be professional, but the staff member didn’t feed him during the day, and let him out to roam freely at night,” Mr. Zhao said.
He continued, saying, “That’s right – all the cats were free to walk around the shop, and then the employee went home.”
It’s unclear what they thought the cats would do once they were left to their own devices.
Predictably, Xioapi did what a cat is going to do when left alone with all those females. He went to town.
“Between around 10.40pm and 5am, my cat mated with five female cats! And those are only the ones I could see in the CCTV footage,” Mr. Zhao said.
And in case this wasn’t already enough to bear, the hotel staff’s response rubbed Mr. Zhao the wrong way.
As he said, “And the pet hotel had the nerve to be upset with me, saying some of the cat owners weren’t planning on having kittens. They wanted me to explain the situation to all the other owners.”
“My cat is now exhausted and on a glucose drip – and this is my fault?”
But the hotel staff changed their tune after they were apparently reminded of something Mr. Zhao had already told them.
Mr. Zhao says he had informed the pet hotel that Xiaopi is not neutered beforehand.
The hotel has apologized, offering to pay for Xiaopi’s fluid therapy and will compensate the owners of the other cats if they have kittens.
Some of those other cat owners have actually offered to compensate Mr. Zhao if they have kittens, too.
“The other owners have also told me they’ll either give me a kitten or £113 (1,000 RMB) if their cats really turn out to be pregnant,” he said.
Part of the reason for the generosity is that these surprise kittens turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
That’s because kittens of pedigreed Russian Blues can be worth over £1,000 ($1,200 U.S.).
