Being in the hospital can be a scary experience, depending on why you are there. Some hospital visits are planned and prepared for, while others are spur-of-the-moment emergencies. Sometimes, we don’t even know that we are in the hospital until we open our eyes , wake up, and see that we’re lying in a white room with tons of medical equipment.
Waking up in the hospital is not something we want to experience, but it has happened to some of us before. And, people who have dealt with it are sharing their stories.

He woke up after a car ride and his life was changed forever.
TorchTheRed said that he hopped in the back of a friend’s car after a rugby game and before he knew it, he woke up in the hospital with no feeling from their waist down. Turns out, they had a head-on collision with a drunk driver and they ended up with a compressed vertebra. His three friends who were also in the car never woke up.
Watermelon Smirnoff is not safe.
Ask-For-Free-Advice shared that they had gotten pretty drunk at 18-years-old off of Smirnoff Watermelon Vodka at a club in Florida and woke up in a hospital in a different state. Apparently, he fell off a tall barstool and busted their head open. They called their friend’s mom in North Dakota trying to get a ride to the hospital.
Anything can happen.
erigunn said that they had woken up in the hospital after they were shot three times in the stomach in a convenience store. They had walked in and apparently, a guy was attempting to rob the store with a gun in his bag, hidden. They had no idea, as the gun was hidden, and asked the robber if he was “on line,” as he was off to the side. He turned around and shot the Reddit user three times in the stomach. They said they only remember entering the store and the rest had to be pieced together.
You can survive drowning.
“Was at the pool, next thing I know I wake up in a hospital bed, feeling very cold and my throat hurts. Turns out I had actually drowned, but the lifeguard had pulled me out and reanimated me for about 45 min. Then I was flown to the hospital by helicopter, where I lay in a coma for 2 days, during which they kept my body temperature low (to prevent cerebral damage caused by lack of oxygen). I could go home a week after the accident,” said another Reddit user.
Games go bad, too.
very_cool_stuff said that when they were a kid, they were playing water guns with their brother, and the next thing they knew, it was Easter Sunday and they were in a hospital bed with a terrible headache and blurred vision. Turns out they had fallen backward and fractured their head and also bruised their brain.
Heatstroke is no joke.
SneakIDPls said that they were running the half-marathon with a friend and felt as though they were “finally” getting their stride and the next thing they knew, they woke up in the ICU and were definitely not at the marathon. Turns out, they had gotten heatstroke and were admitted to the hospital with a 108.6 fever.
Drunk drivers are terrible people.
“Woke up in the hospital summer of 2002 cuffed to a hospital bed. Tubes all over me and stitches all over my chest. The night before I was hit by a drunk driver. had a 6inch gash down the center of my chest exposing a few ribs. After I was discharged I spoke with the gas station attendant who told me that he denied the driver a beer sale because he was already wasted. That [expletive] was never found,” shared Riesengarde .

jimofwales said that they were home watching TV when all of a sudden they woke up in a hospital bed. Sounds wild, right? Turns out, the Reddit user got off the coach way too fast, didn’t get enough blood flow to the head, and passed out. They hit their head on the floor and fractured their skull. They’re 6’6”.

Reddit user pedazzle said that they were at their school’s sports carnival just hanging out and watching friends play various sports, as it was a huge thing at their school. The next thing they knew, they woke up in a hospital bed with no idea how they had gotten from point A to point B. They had gotten smacked in the head by a flying metal bat from people playing baseball.
This took a turn for the worst.
CRAGEWRAITH shared that they were on the way home from work and were hit by a truck. It was a hit and run, and they found out who did it a few months later when they were at their best friend’s house having dinner. Turns out, his best friend’s older brother had been the one who was driving the truck that hit him.
Customers are not always right.
“Cut a guy off while bartending in college. He wasn’t too happy, grabbed a bottle, and chucked it at the back of my head as I turned around. Woke up in a hospital bed with my best regular and his wife ensuring me I’d be ok and the guy wouldn’t ‘be a problem,'” wrote kefkaeatsbabies .
My heart breaks.
daintyanus said that they woke up in a hospital bed with their roommate and their roommate’s mom and screamed because they were 7 months pregnant and their pregnant belly was nowhere to be found. They had been hit by a drunk driver while in the car with their fiancé and lost her baby and her fiancé in the accident.
21st birthday fun.
Kbiski was celebrating their 21st birthday with friends, pre-gaming, and taking tons of shots before they went out together to a bar to celebrate. Then, they woke up in a hospital bed. Turns out, in their drunk spit, they got out of the cab too fast and they ended up hitting their head on the curb.
Candy should always be monitored.
TeutonicTwit was celebrating Christmas with their family and friends, having some candy at their house. A week later, they woke up in the hospital unaware of what had happened. Turns out, all the cookies and candy they were eating sent them into a Diabetic Coma. It lasted 5-days before they woke up.
