Are you the type of person who says things like, “oh, I would never do that,” or “I wouldn’t like that”? Well, it’s definitely understandable. Sometimes we all get stuck in our ways. But I always believe that it’s good to keep an open mind.
So I was really intrigued when somebody asked on Reddit , “What’s the biggest ‘don’t knock it til you try it?” and people sure had a lot to say. I’m sharing a few of the best responses to this question below. Check it out.
Colored LED Lights
“I assumed they were stupid novelties. The kind of thing I would expect to see in a college dorm or something, but not anything I would want. I can’t believe how much I love colored lights. I work from home in a small office. I have an LED strip behind the monitors, one for the keyboard to light up, and two light bulbs above me. And it’s amazing.
“I have less eye fatigue/fewer headaches but more than that, I just really like being able to change it. Green is my favorite. Feels ridiculous to say, but I swear, I see better with green light. I really do get entirely different vibes from the colors. I’m not saying it’s not all in my head, but they are fairly inexpensive, last forever, and let you do silly stuff like have the lights turn on two minutes before you show up, or make a button that your kid can hit that makes the lights flash so I can go up and help with his breakfast.”
Hmm, I’ve never thought of that.
Weighted Blanket
“I was skeptical and thought I’d hate how it felt but now I cannot sleep without it! It’s done a lot for my pain and anxiety.”
I’ve actually heard a lot about these blankets, but I haven’t bit the bullet and bought one yet. I’m willing to give it a go, though.
Blackout Curtains
“Getting a properly dark room to sleep in is a game changer. You don’t need to spend stupid money on them either — if you have blinds already you can get a regular curtain rod and rail and double up.”
We have these and we love them too.
Get A Bidet
“As an American, I get laughed every single time I talk about how amazing my bidet is. But you know what? Doesn’t bother me at all. I know what I’m talking about as I have lived both lives, and i can tell you bidets are 100% better.”
Haha! I want one.
Play Board Games
“Euro-style board games like Settlers of Catan , Ticket to Ride , or Carcassonne . When I tell people I play board games like this they automatically think they would hate it but give it one try and most people enjoy them. The hardest part is actually getting someone to sit down and try one.”
I’d like to play one.
Therapy
“YES! Turns out my wife and I have A TON of issues from our [expletive] up parents. Some are a big deal, some are small but we decided together that for our relationship and for our children that the generational trauma that’s been passed down so many times ends with us.”
Kudos to these two for doing this for their relationship and their kids.
Salt In Coffee
“Adding a pinch of salt to your coffee. Something about the salt inhibits the taste of bitterness.”
OMG, what? I’ve never heard of that. If you have tried it, please let me know. I don’t want to ruin a perfect cup of coffee, haha.
Menstrual Cup
“ITS THE BEST and you save so much money and it’s good for your cookie. I miss having my period, three years without one!”
Um, I don’t know about that. Honestly, I’m still on the fence about using one. How do you put it in properly? That’s what I’m afraid of, really.
Anchovies
“Everyone I know who hasn’t tried anchovies is convinced they’re disgusting. Every single person I’ve gotten to try anchovies on pizza ended up falling in love with them.”
I admit I still haven’t tried them. I do like sardines and sprats so I should try anchovies, right?
Weird Food Combinations
“Often times when someone tells about a weird food combination everyone looks disgusted instead of actually trying it at first. Of course, there are things that are just plain up too much, eg dipping the whole butter stick in Nutella, but for example, on pizza, why don’t you try one or two at first weird sounding combinations instead of directly labeling it as disgusting? Life is too short to not try out new things that don’t hurt you, and if it doesn’t taste good, don’t do it again and judge knowing that you tried.”
True dat!
Music Genres
“Any type of music genre. Just try AT LEAST one song before you judge it.”
Okay, okay. Maybe I’ll listen to one country song that won’t be about some guy in a truck, haha. I’ll give it a go.
Cold Plunge
“Cold plunge in a running river in the Rockies in Canada. Jesus Christ, it’s cold but is the best feeling in the world.”
Um, I don’t think I’ll be doing that. I absolutely hate being cold so there’s that.
Travel Solo
“Solo travel. It’s awesome! I can plan and do whatever itinerary I want. I don’t need to wait for anybody to go anywhere, I can choose the hotel, the food, the waking up time, everything. The only downside is that, as a woman, I have to always have an eye out for the creeps I may encounter, however, it is still worth it!”
I totally get that, but for some reason, I prefer to travel with someone. I just need that companion when I go to a new place, that’s all.
Pineapple On Pizza
“I used to talk so much trash about it but then I tried it and omg — I’ve been in love since.”
Haha, once you really give it a try I’m pretty sure you’ll like it too. I don’t know why some people think it’s so weird.
Take Walks For Your Mental Health
“Taking walks for your mental health. They sound kind of boring and whatever when presented to you at first. But when you try it, you immediately feel your head clearing up and it just feels good all around. A good mix of non-tiring exercise and fresh air with nature as well.”
I can attest to that. I started to go for walks in the park and it’s honestly the best part of my day. Just me and nature.
Reconnect With Your Inner Child
“Give the little you a chance to do what you’ve always wanted, but never could. No one likes adult responsibilities, but it’s especially depressing when you’re forced into taking on those responsibilities while your inner child still needs healing.”
“Go to the skate park; wear a [expletive] helmet. Watch the kids’ show all your friends talked about, but you never got to watch, or the adult swim show that your parents were against. Learn that dance choreography that looked fun but you were too self-conscious to be a part of. YouTube has a ton of tutorials See how long you can jump rope; learn how to do a cross jump. Go to the local pool and do weird tricks and jumps off the diving board; see how long you can hold your breath, do front and back flips underwater.”
“Go out to the desert, seek out the lowest light pollution, star gaze; buy a cheap telescope, use the constellation tracker app, look up meteor shower events near you. Pick up a book about dinosaurs. Go to a crafts store and just make something, anything; hang it on your wall, or your door.”
Oh, my gosh! I absolutely love this.
Try Meditation
“I thought it was some kind of hokey tree-hugger mumbo jumbo at first until I learned that all meditation requires is that you sit still and focus on your breathing. I love it now. It’s amazing how energizing and calming it is.”
I still need to get into that.
What do you think of these ideas here?
Did they open up your horizons at least a little? I know it can be hard to do something you’ve never done, but you can’t knock it until you try it. You must agree with that. So if you’re feeling bold, do something you never thought you would like and come back here to tell us all about it. I’m going to do that, too, so let’s make a deal.
