“NTA I’m Asian and I hear these comments directed at relatives around me all the time. I also happen to have features that make me look half Asian, and its honestly so gross how many compliments I receive because I don’t look ‘that’ Asian. At one point someone had jokingly accused my mom of cheating because I didn’t look Asian enough. Comments on how Asian or not Asian a child looks are so harmful growing up – especially since there’s very harmful self-hating beauty standards Asians have (like why are Asian people prettier if they have ‘white features).
Good job for protecting your child and showing your MIL there are consequences. Even if MIL does come around you or your child again, you need to put your foot down each time. She might get it, she might never get it, but it’ll be satisfying for sure. And honestly, MIL has been disrespecting you long before you snapped. I think your reaction was deserved.” “Genetics are crazy. My mom was asian/pacific islander and my dad is white; my husband is white and when I had our son he came out with asian eyes. He looks just like my mom when he smiles, did not expect it to still be such a strong trait.”
