A mother has divided the internet after she allowed her son to wear a wedding dress to school.
The point of the unorthodox outfit was to protest another teen who had been suspended for wearing a crop top at school . But instead of her town — or parents — encouraging her decision, they turned against her .
This mother (user @Beautiful_Move7646) took her dilemma to Reddit’s Am I The A*****e (AITA) community.

There, she explained that her teenage son enjoys cross-dressing and often “goes out in effeminate outfits.” So when he asked to wear her wedding dress to school, she wasn’t shocked.
Besides, his request had a greater purpose to it.

He explained that his friend had gotten suspended from school for three days for wearing a crop top. So he wanted to protest the decision by showing up to school in something more distracting.
What’s more distracting than a wedding dress?

It certainly makes a statement! Since her ex-husband was abusive, the mother was okay with him wearing a dress that no longer holds any sentimental value to her. “Him wearing a dress isn’t illegal or dangerous,” she wrote.
She did, however, ask him not to ruin it.

In the end, another worst-case scenario happened: “My son went to school and apparently some kid took a picture of him and posted it on Instagram. It circulated to Facebook, where my parents saw the photo.”
“They cussed me out over the phone, saying I shouldn’t allow ‘[expletive] in my house,” she wrote.

She continued: “That I need to get my son into a church and get him saved, and berated me for almost an hour.”
“I am now the talk of the town and everyone thinks I am a horrible parent.”

This harsh reaction prompted her to turn to Reddit to get people’s opinions on whether what she allowed her son to do was wrong.
Instead of racking on the judgement, many rallied behind her decision.

“It’s your wedding dress, and I think it’s great that your son is mature enough to protest things he thinks are unjust without breaking rules or being obstructive or shouty,” one user commented.
“Your son found a creative way of supporting his friend. A guy wearing a dress is one thing but a wedding dress is magnificent in its flamboyance,” another wrote.

They continued on, stating that wearing a dress isn’t a sign of being gay.
The woman’s parents were bashed for their response.

“Your parents are abusive homophobes, though. How are you going to protect your son from them, and from the social media / small town gossip fallout among others like them, going forward?” one asked.
“What a way to reveal the bigotry that runs in your own family,” another wrote.

The only thing she was really judged for was allowing her parents to yell at her.
“NTA, lol you’re kid is funny. But why did you sit on the phone listening to your parents ranting for an hour.”
“My mum gets a bout 20 seconds and if I don’t want to hear it..click,” the user continued.

The mother responded to this, writing that her parents threatened to get CPS (Child Protective Services) involved if I didn’t listen to them.” She also wrote that they have two previous complaints on her.
