Thanksgiving is meant to be a day of familial love and celebration, one in which everyone shares what they are thankful for.
But for a family celebrating in a mansion in Connecticut, it did not end very well.
The big day of celebration went south after the mansion caught on fire due to the family attempting to fry a turkey in their garage.
The residents weren’t so careful
Turkeys are one of the main items on the Thanksgiving dinner table, but they are not an easy meal to cook. One has to be incredibly careful with the fire.
It seems that the family at a Connecticut mansion wasn’t careful enough.
The place caught on fire
The place caught on fire after residents of the mansion attempted to fry their Thanksgiving turkey in the garage.
An automatic fire alarm on the road called firefighters to the home in Weston, Connecticut, at 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, November 28.
The fire department rushed to the scene
The automatic fire alarm was on Weston Road, which is a wealthy area in Weston Town.
The Weston Volunteer Fire Department later explained in a Facebook post, “Upon arrival, fire personnel located a well involved garage fire that was rapidly extending into the residence.”
The flames were aggressive
“Firefighters attempted an aggressive fire attack however their efforts were thwarted by dangerous fire conditions and structural collapse,” the Weston Volunteer Fire Department wrote.
The fire was stubborn, putting the firefighters through a serious struggle to bring it down.
They spent 16 hours at the scene
The fire department spent 16 hours at the scene of the fire battling to bring it down. The flames were incredibly hard to reach as they were high and strong.
The extensive heat also stopped them from getting too close.
Firefighters reported it was a turkey
The firefighters believed the fire had started when the residents frying their Thanksgiving turkey in the garage went wrong.
However, this is only what the fire department believed, and no official statement has been made about the cause of the fire yet.
The fire department chief spoke about it
“When we arrived, the whole garage end of the house was on fire – like a third of the house,” Weston Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Pokorny told CT Insider.
“It accelerated really rapidly. We had great water supply,” the chief added.
The fire had been rapidly expanding
Chief John Pokorny continued, “Really, the issue was that the fire had progressed so much by the time we arrived on the scene.”
As reported by CT Insider, there were 25 people at the mansion that day for Thanksgiving.
Everyone got out safely
All 25 people celebrating Thanksgiving at the scene got out safely, but the fire was so grand that the mansion has since been ruled uninhabitable by officials.
Photos of the fire were released by Weston Today, showing only the deck as the only identifiable part of the mansion.
Weston First Selectwoman gave a statement
The Weston First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor gave a statement thanking everyone involved in putting out the fire.
She ended it by saying, “Special thanks to the Weston Public Work, American Red Cross, Salvation Army of Danbury, Aquarion, Eversource and Soco Gas for their assistance. Thank you for your Service and I am grateful everyone is safe.”
