Who here is a fan of interior design ? Raise your hand! I happen to be one of these people, too. So whenever there is a new idea out there, I sure like to check out if it would jive with me.
However, just like other trends , interior design can be in or out sooner than you realize. So when a Redditor asked interior designers, “What current aesthetic trends do you think will age poorly?” I was all ears. Let’s go find out.
1. Open Concept
“Yes, open layouts make the house appear bigger, but I can’t get over how much it makes a house echo. When you have more than a few people living in your home, they make it truly impossible to have much privacy.”
I can hear you from all the way across the room, lol.
2. Shiplap
“Shiplap. It’s literally just wood paneling painted white… but I can’t stand it.”
Honestly, I never got that either. I prefer just a white wall instead of all that wood paneling. And what if you change your mind? How much work will that be to remove it, huh?
3. Gray Vinyl Flooring
“Gray vinyl flooring. Wood isn’t gray. Stop pretending it is.”
Ha, ha! Am I one of those weird people who likes gray? But I get it, it does look a bit odd as a flooring color choice. I prefer it as a wall color indeed.
4. All Gray Interiors
“All-gray interiors that scream, ‘This house is a flip!'”
Speaking of gray, this is what I’m talking about, alright. I have to admit I still like this trend — so sue me, ha, ha. I guess I’m the only one, huh?
5. Farmhouse Decor
“Farmhouse is already dead. Not even going to say RIP to that garbage.”
LOL! Somebody is being a little overdramatic. Don’t you think? But I was never a fan of this idea in the first place, so I get it.
6. Subway Tile
“Subway Tile? C’mon.”
I understand the appeal of this, but I agree this design here is already so outdated. It’s only going to get older as we speak, hee-hee, so fuhgeddaboutit.
7. Sliding Barn Doors
“My answer is probably sliding barn doors.”
Nope, not in my house. Never! Those doors belong in a barn, that’s all. I never liked this idea either so let’s just move on to something better, okay?
8. Live, Laugh, Love

“Anything that says Live. Laugh. Love.”
I don’t know, but are we to blame Eat Pray Love for that, or where did that expression come from, huh? Can anybody enlighten me, please? I really need to know that.
9. Accent Walls With Abstract Diagonal Lines
“Those accent walls with the abstract diagonal lines. Will age like popcorn ceilings and wood paneling on walls.”
Again, just like shiplap I never got into this design idea either. How about you? Do you like that?
10. Brown Granite Countertops With White Appliances
“Brown granite countertops look like something from my chain-smoking great-grandma’s house.”
Ha, ha! Perhaps this isn’t the same case but close enough, huh? It’s time we update that idea, no? Let’s find something a lot more exciting.
11. Black Houses
“When people paint their houses black. They’re annoying as hell when it comes to upkeep.”
Nope! I don’t like that idea either. Not that I like white houses either, but this is just a little depressing for me.
12. Moroccan Tiles
“The Moroccan-inspired tile in every home. It definitely works in some houses, but it’s being put everywhere right now. I don’t think it’ll age well — except in houses where it’s genuinely aligned with the rest of the architecture.”
Agreed! Even though I really do like Moroccan tiles, they need to work with the rest of the house. Otherwise, they stick out like a sore thumb.
13. Linear Mosaic Tile
“Linear mosaic tile. Oh god, it’s ugly…and since I’m a designer, everyone is asking for it. I straight-up tell our clients not to do it. It’s going to look like [expletive] in 10 years — I mean, it looks like [expletive] now, but it’ll be so dated then.”
I literally hate this idea.
14. Pallet Wood
“Pallet wood. You have no idea what the hell soaked into those things during their lifetime/transport.”
Oh, I can only imagine, ha, ha. We use it as firewood in our backyard. That’s all it’s good for, aha! I hope you’re on the same page as I am, huh?
15. Granite Countertops
“Granite countertops — especially brown granite.”
Yes, I agree with that. I would definitely go for marble over granite in a heartbeat. While we’re on the subject, is marble also getting out of style? Say it isn’t so. I still like that a lot.
16. Painted Brick
“Painted brick. If you don’t want to look at it, render or stucco it — but painting is a quick and often less-than-successful process of ‘restoring’ brickwork.”
Yuck! Why would anybody even do that? That’s a dumb idea in my book. And it just looks a bit odd. I, for one, love natural bricks. They’re way better than this ill-conceived idea.
17. Cottagecore
Okay, first of all, if you want to escape to the cottage — do so! Don’t bring that aesthetic home. It just doesn’t work. It only makes your place look like you got stuff from your grandma, and it isn’t even all that cute, lol.
18. Blue Cabinet And Gold Hardware
“The tired ‘blue cabinet and gold hardware’ trend in kitchens and bathrooms.”
I have to admit, this was kind of nice back in the day, but it’s been way overdone. I have seen it in so many places that I’m definitely tired of it. How about you?
So, what do you think about these interior design choices?

Do you agree that they are becoming outdated now? Which one of them are you totally sick of seeing everywhere? For me, it would definitely be shiplap and sliding barn doors. I never want to see that in anybody’s house unless they live in an actual barn, hee-hee. Are you with me on this one?
But I am super excited to see what new interior decorating ideas will emerge soon. I think we’re ready for a real change, huh?
